About HSNT

The board, staff, and volunteers at the Humane Society of North Texas are motivated by our mission to save, shelter, protect, and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas.

Founded in 1905, HSNT has been saving lives for over 120 years and is the oldest animal welfare organization in the DFW area. We are more than just an animal shelter; we are a resource to the entire community, offering a range of innovative, affordable, and lifesaving services.

HSNT programs include pet adoptions, free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, and cruelty investigations. HSNT operates two pet adoption centers in North Texas, a transition center in Tarrant County, a low-cost clinic in Fort Worth, and a 33-acre equine ranch located in Johnson County. We also conduct adoption events at several PetSmart and Petco stores in the DFW area, as well as hosting the annual DFW MEGA Adoption Event. HSNT is proud to have helped 15,886 pets in 2025 while achieving a live release rate of 96%.

Our motto encompasses the heart of our work: Pets and People, Saving Each Other®.

Our Needs

HSNT relies almost entirely on private donations to fund our innovative, affordable, and lifesaving programs and services. There are many ways businesses, foundations, and individuals can help HSNT fulfill its crucial mission: "To save shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas." Below are some of the ways you can make an impact on the thousands of pets we care for annually:

$25: Provides a heartworm test for one pet in need

$50: Covers the cost of enrichment, toys, and treats for 20+ shelter pets

$75: Funds a spay or neuter surgery for one pet in need

$100: Covers the cost of supplies for one adult pet or litter in foster care

$300: Provides preventive veterinary care for one pet of a senior citizen

$500: Saves one pet rescued from instances involving cruelty or neglect

$1,000: Provides medical and farrier care to rehabilitate one horse rescued from neglect

$1,500: Funds major medical care for a severely injured pet

$5,000: Covers the cost of care for one horse during their time at the HSNT Equine Ranch

From Survival to Second Chance: Your Impact for Pets Like Elmer

Your ongoing support of HSNT and our efforts truly makes a lifesaving difference for pets who have nowhere else to turn. Not every story begins with hope -- but thanks to our dedicated supporters, many can still have a happy ending. Recently, HSNT rescued 2-month-old kitten, Elmer, and his story exemplifies our motto: Pets and People, Saving Each Other®

Elmer was brought to HSNT by a Good Samaritan after finding the tiny kitten in a bucket of industrial adhesive. Covered in the glue-like substance from head to tail, he stuck to every surface -- gloves, towels, anything that touched his frail little body. Elmer was also severely dehydrated, and the thick adhesive prevented him from eating and drinking. HSNT staff acted quickly and spent hours continuously dipping Elmer in canola oil to dissolve the glue. Our team remained by his side every step of the way.

While Elmer is now glue-free, he certainly earned his namesake by sticking close by Foster Hero (now Adopter). While Elmer's second-chance tale may have received local, national, and international attention, we know that his story is just one of thousands that your support makes possible each and every day. On behalf of Elmer and all the pets that will come through our doors in the days and weeks ahead -- thank you for standing with us and making a lifesaving difference for pets across North Texas.

Volunteer Opportunities

HSNT would not be able to serve thousands of animals each year without the help of our dedicated volunteers, and we thank you! We depend greatly on volunteer support to ensure the health and happiness of our shelter pets. If you love animals, HSNT has a volunteer opening just for you!

Why Volunteer at HSNT?

When you donate your time to HSNT, you help provide the extra love and support our animals need to prepare for their forever homes. At the end of the day, you’ll know that your time had an impact on HSNT’s animals, and we’re sure they’ll have an impact on you, too!

Mission

HSNT's mission is to save, shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas.

Equity Statement

HSNT works to ensure the people in our community have the resources to vaccinate and spay or neuter their pets, allowing the pets to stay healthy. We provide free and low-cost services to people in the 11 lowest income zip codes in Fort Worth. Most of these zip codes are racially diverse and serve minority communities. HSNT is also an open admission shelter and accepts animals from the general public, regardless of what city they live in. HSNT is also an open adoption center.
