Rae of Hope - Free Preventive Vet Care for Seniors

This year, I have volunteered to help the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) raise much-needed funds for its innovative, affordable, and lifesaving programs and services! HSNT is more than a shelter; it's a lifeline for pets in need and serves as a resource to the community in helping to save pet lives through adoptions, rescuing pets from cruelty and abuse, and treating pets of underserved clients at our clinic.

For many seniors in North Texas, a pet is far more than an animal - it is a constant source of love, and provides the companionship to keep seniors healthy and connected. Yet for those living on fixed incomes, the cost of veterinary care can quickly become overwhelming, forcing them into heartbreaking decisions: pay for food or pay for a pet’s medicine; skip a medical appointment to afford a pet’s vaccines; or, in the most painful cases, surrender their beloved companion to a shelter.  

The Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), founded in 1905, is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, serving over 15,000 pets annually. In 2014, we launched Rae of Hope (ROH) to directly address this crisis among low-income seniors. This unique program provides free, preventive veterinary care to help seniors keep their pets healthy and in their homes. Services include core vaccinations, microchipping, a full year of flea/tick prevention and heartworm medication, and (when funding allows) free spay/neuter surgeries and heartworm treatment for pets in need.
