Alcoholism is a chronic relapsing mental health disorder characterized by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using. The alcoholic problem in the United States is staggering: one in ten adults suffers from the disease and less than 8% will receive the help they need. While one in twelve women is alcoholic, an estimated one in eight men is affected – in DFW alone, that’s an astounding 662,000 individuals. Alcoholism is the fourth-leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
The Magdalen House is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals find freedom from alcoholism through the following comprehensive, no-cost programs: a two-week residential social detox program (First Step), a three-month non-residential educational program (Next Step), daily solution-focused meetings, workshops, and family support (Community), and additional resources and education through community partnerships (Outreach). Our programs work with and feed into each other: First Step allows the individual to achieve sobriety, Next Step promotes growth in and understanding of the 12-Steps, and our thriving Community facilitates sustained recovery. All programs operate 365 days a year. We offer individuals a continuum of care and promote a lifetime of sustained recovery. We provide the only privately funded and completely free recovery programs in DFW. We do not require insurance, we have gender-specific facilities, and our programming is peer-implemented. While the value of saving lives and rebuilding families cannot be quantified, providing our services at no cost demonstrates a commitment to improving lives and restoring dignity by serving those struggling with a mental and physical disease who want to receive help. What was once a dream for our founders has become a reality: a thriving recovery community for alcoholic individuals and their families.
The disease of alcoholism does not discriminate, and we believe neither should the solution. It is not limited to a single demographic, nor does it exclusively prey on those individuals with devastating circumstances. It affects people of all ages, genders, races and cultures. These people are our parents, siblings, employers, employees, and friends. Individuals often enter The Magdalen House desperate, broken, and dying, but are immediately met with compassion, empathy, and hope. Seeing their experience reflected in another who has recovered is what empowers them. With us, people learn they have a disease, not a defect, and become motivated to seek the solution to their problem. We offer hope to every person, no matter where they come from, and celebrate the diversity of the those who walk through our doors. We aim to unite our community through their shared experiences. We emphasize the common problem of alcoholism and focus on the common solution available.
At The Magdalen House, we watch the transformative powers of recovery at work on a daily basis, as the same individuals who walked into our facility once broken, desperate, and despairing transform into selfless, confident, and content people. These hard-won achievements influence our clients to become better parents, more responsible sons and daughters, and more productive members of their communities. When asked, “What did The Magdalen House do for you?”, the most common refrain is, “The Magdalen House saved my life.”
By donating to us today, you will ensure that individuals fighting the disease of alcoholism become equipped with the tools needed to change their lives and in turn find the freedom they, and their families, deserve.
Your support will allow us to continue to instill hope into those who were once hopeless, breaking the devastation of addiction for generations to come.
