Need: According to the World Bank, since 2016, an average of 108,000 square miles of forest have been cut down every year. Urban areas in Texas, in particular, face significant challenges that manifest as hotter and longer summers, increased heat waves, and more severe droughts necessitating urgent action. The current average canopy cover in the DFW area is 29% against a target of 37% by 2040, and the statistic is lower in areas of economic inequity. As Texas is rapidly urbanizing, we need partnerships between our states, cities, corporations, and nonprofits to care for our community centers where we live, work, and play. Policies and governmental actions, fines and incentives, and a gradual rising of overall awareness will gradually move us in the right direction. But time is running out and there is a need for immediate action.

Solution

Expand Urban Reforestation and Habitat Restoration: Increase number of native trees and shrubs, particularly in low income neighborhoods. This will mitigate the negative effects of climate change, enhance carbon sequestration, protect biodiversity and wildlife, and provide ecological, social, and environmental justice benefits. Developing green spaces is something communities can easily get involved with.

Conduct More Litter Pick-Ups: Engage more community groups in cleaning public parks and creeks, removing invasive species, picking up trash and improving local environments.

Increase Educational Outreach & Workforce Development: Reach more individuals, and foster deep understanding of sustainability to prepare for climate action and green jobs. Conduct show and tell for Net Zero solutions with examples, interactive games and demonstrations.
