Founder, Kate Barfield, was diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in 2018. At the time of her diagnosis, she was given the option to pursue fertility preservation before beginning treatment.
For Kate, that meant undergoing egg retrieval and storage—an essential step to protect her future fertility. However, these procedures are not covered by insurance, even though infertility is a direct side effect of cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, or the surgical removal of reproductive organs. Kate was fortunate to have the financial support of her family to cover the cost.
But through her experience, she quickly learned that far too many young women decline fertility preservation simply because they cannot afford it. Determined to change that, Kate founded Kate’s Cause with the mission to provide financial assistance to young women facing the same choice she did.
To date, Kate’s Cause has raised over $80,000 and proudly partners with MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program, which helps identify and connect eligible recipients with the funds they need to protect their future.
