From Finding His Voice to Finding His Place: Wyatt’s Journey to Thrive
Help Us Support a Community Where Kids Like Wyatt Are Truly Seen, Supported, and Celebrated
As Wyatt’s parents, we often reflect on how far this journey has taken us.
Four years ago, we were coming to the end of another chapter. We had moved to Dallas from NYC in 2018 with a clear purpose — to begin Wyatt’s educational journey. His early years had been filled with countless doctor appointments, therapy sessions and the kind of advocacy that families navigating an autism diagnosis know well.
When Wyatt turned five, we were determined to find an inclusion program where he could learn alongside peer models. We found that at a school district here in my hometown, and spent four wonderful years there. Wyatt found his voice — literally. He fell in love with his teachers, his therapists, his whole school community. His peers embraced him and we built many happy memories.
But as he grew, we knew he - and we - needed more.
Vanguard was more.
Here, Wyatt is in smaller classes where he’s truly known — not just placed. His teachers and counselors care about his growth academically, emotionally, and as a whole person. The curriculum meets him where he is while preparing him for what’s next, balancing academics with life skills that build real independence.
But what has meant just as much are the experiences. From participating in sports like kickball and pickleball, to exploring performing arts, Wyatt is encouraged to try new things in an environment where he feels safe and celebrated. Even opportunities like sleep-away camp—something we once couldn’t have imagined—have become part of his world, giving him independence and memories we never thought possible.
He’s more confident now. He has real friendships—kids he laughs with, connects with, and wants to spend time with outside of school.
Phil and I have also found a community of parents who get it, without explanation. Some of our closest friendships have come from this shared experience.
Autism Awareness Month matters to us because it’s bigger than awareness. It’s about understanding, inclusion, and building environments where kids like Wyatt can thrive.
Vanguard embodies that every single day.
As a small way to give back during this month, I’m connecting this mission to my business, SweetE Gifts. For every donation made toward Vanguard, I’ll send a complimentary “Be Kind, Stay SweetE” candy confetti jar — a small token that reflects something we try to live by: kindness, acceptance, and celebrating every individual’s journey.
We are incredibly grateful to be part of the Vanguard community—a place that not only supports our son but reminds us daily of what’s possible when children are truly seen, supported, and celebrated.
