Help Protect North Texas Prairies -- Before They Disappear
Texas prairies are home to some of our most iconic wildflowers and beloved wildlife - Monarch butterflies, Bobwhite quail, and Texas horned lizards, to name a few. These vibrant grasslands provide essential benefits: clean water, healthy soils, food production, flood protection, carbon storage, and open spaces for outdoor recreation.
But native prairies are vanishing. Once spanning over 12 million acres across North and Central Texas, less than 1% of these diverse and productive ecosystems remain. And the losses are accelerating -- Texas is losing 650 acres of open space every single day to development.
There's hope -- because people like you are stepping up.
Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) is leading the charge to protect and restore native prairie landscapes across the state. Recognizing the urgency in North Texas, NPAT launched the North Texas Prairie Initiative (NTPI) — a bold, multi-pronged effort to conserve our remaining prairies, revive degraded grasslands, and build a powerful network of people who care.
NTPI is focused on protecting prairie habitat across the 33-county region surrounding Dallas-Fort Worth using tools like conservation easements, restoration projects, and public engagement to ensure long-term stewardship and protection.
Right now, your gift goes twice as far.
A generous donor has offered a 1:1 match for EVERY DOLLAR raised -- that's right, every dollar you give will be matched, doubling your impact on prairie conservation in North Texas.
Your support will help:
WHY NATIVE PRAIRIES MATTER
Texas prairies are among our most valuable ecosystems. They support remarkable biodiversity, protect water quality, reduce flooding, build healthy soils, and sequester more carbon per acre than forests. They also provide places of peace, beauty, and recreation. In fact, major Texas cities -- including DFW and Houston -- are incorporating prairie restoration into their climate resilience plans.
WHEN YOU SUPPORT NPAT
NPAT gets people out on the prairie. The Fort Worth and Blackland (Dallas) chapters offer regular field trips, educational events, volunteer workdays, and partnerships with local parks, Texas Master Naturalist chapters, and other conservation groups. We also have a new Northeast Texas Chapter that is gearing up for ways to engage in their area. NPAT chapters are a great way for you and your family to explore, connect, and make a difference -- right in your own backyard.
YOU make all of this possible. We rely on our extraordinary members, donors, and volunteers. If you are already an NPAT supporter -- thank you! If you are new to NPAT, you are invited to join this unique family of prairie enthusiasts and discover native prairies, be inspired by their beauty, and save a historic part of our Texas heritage.
Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) is dedicated to conserving native prairies -- and their vital benefits -- through land protection, stewardship, and community.
NPAT is a nonprofit land trust that owns or protects over 7,000 acres throughout the state, much of it in North Texas. We regularly connect with rural landowners to share knowledge about the benefits of preserving or restoring their native grasslands. More are recognizing the importance of conservation for the future benefit of people and wildlife. We also educate the urban public about prairies, encouraging native plants in yards, gardens, and public spaces to support and attract beneficial pollinators and birds.
Help Us Grow the North Texas Prairie Initiative. Additional matching funds are needed to expand our North Texas Prairie Initiative (NTPI).
In 2025, all North Texas Giving Day gifts will support our work to connect with rural landowners interested in protecting or restoring native grasslands, educate the public about the beauty and benefits of prairie ecosystems, and strengthen conservation partnerships across the region.
Every dollar helps ensure more prairie is protected and restored—for today and for future generations.
Thank you for helping us preserve a unique piece of Texas heritage.
