Equity Statement

At Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, we believe every person is created in the image of God and is worthy of dignity, belonging, and love. Because of that sacred truth, equity is not simply one of our values—it is a faithful response to the Gospel.

Jesus consistently drew near to those who had been excluded, overlooked, or marginalized. He crossed social, political, economic, and religious boundaries to build a community where every person could flourish. We seek to follow that same example.

We recognize that people do not all begin from the same place. Systems of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, economic inequality, ageism, and other forms of oppression continue to shape opportunities and outcomes in our communities. Faithfulness requires more than treating everyone the same; it calls us to remove barriers, repair harm, and create pathways so that all people can fully participate in the life of our church and our community.

Therefore, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church is committed to:

Creating spaces where every person experiences genuine belonging, respect, and spiritual care.

Practicing accessibility as an essential expression of hospitality, including accommodations for people with disabilities and diverse communication needs.

Advocating for justice in our neighborhood and beyond by addressing the root causes of poverty, discrimination, violence, housing instability, food insecurity, and inequitable access to healthcare and education.

Examining our own policies, practices, and assumptions with humility, transparency, and accountability so that we continue growing as an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and affirming congregation.

Partnering with organizations and neighbors who share our commitment to building a more just, compassionate, and equitable community.

We understand that equity is not a destination but a continual practice of discipleship. It requires listening, learning, repentance, courage, and hope.

As a Reconciling United Methodist congregation, we affirm the full participation of LGBTQIA+ people in every aspect of the life, leadership, and ministry of the church. We also affirm that immigrants, refugees, people experiencing homelessness, people in recovery, people living with disabilities, and those who have experienced exclusion or harm within religious communities are beloved members of God's family whose gifts enrich the Body of Christ.

Our commitment to equity is lived through worship that reflects many voices, ministries that prioritize dignity, advocacy that confronts injustice, and relationships rooted in mutual respect and compassion.

We believe God's Kin-dom grows wherever barriers fall, strangers become neighbors, and love becomes action.
