Equity and opportunity for every family. There’s a reason why this vision statement is at the top of our website, and it’s not just because these words sound inspiring. To us, “equity and opportunity for every family” is so much more than that—it is a promise. A promise to you and the families we serve of a future defined by hope and prosperity.

Your support has given families access to resources that are critical to helping them overcome the cycle of generational poverty. As a result, you have impacted the lives of over 250,000 people since our founding 40 years ago. 

The Latino community is the fastest-growing demographic in North Texas. In fact, two out of every five Dallas-area residents are Latino. And yet, Latinos have the highest medical uninsured rates of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S., and only 54% in DFW have a high school diploma. Your generosity allows The Concilio to serve as a guide for families who are trying to navigate complex systems – like public health insurance, assistance with food and basic needs, and education, just to name a few. You make these systems more accessible so that even more families can benefit from available resources.

To help Latino and other diverse families achieve social equity, we have carefully designed our programs to highlight three areas of impact: health, wealth, and education. Each of these areas of impact enables families to overcome cultural barriers and invest in their future success. 

Health

As families learn to improve their health and well-being, they also reduce their risk of chronic disease.  

Through Healthy Kids, Healthy Families (HKHF), families are encouraged to change unhealthy habits that lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease by nourishing their bodies with healthy food and engaging in fun, physical activities as a family. Comprando Rico Y Sano helps improve the knowledge of healthy shopping and eating in a culturally sensitive educational program.

Both of these programs are free of charge and offer enrollment assistance in federal programs like SNAP and CHIP/Medicaid.

Wealth

To help families develop long-term financial stability, your support can provide crisis intervention, financial education, and other resources. 

Crisis Intervention is designed to help families transition out of an immediate crisis through emergency food aid and financial assistance with rent and utilities. Families also receive assistance with navigating and understanding federal assistance programs. We also offer free financial empowerment workshops throughout the year to help families plan for the future by meeting financial goals.

Education

Educational opportunities are essential to helping families achieve long-term success and self sufficiency. That’s why we assist families with maximizing these opportunities, from cradle to career.

In Parents Advocating for Student Excellence (PASE), parents learn more about the public school system, how to effectively communicate with teachers, and how to nurture their students’ love of learning through elementary, middle, and high school. Another one of our popular educational programs, Parents As Leaders (PAL), gives parents the confidence and tools to encourage the language, motor, and social-emotional skills needed for their children to be ready for kindergarten.

Your support for this programming is huge for the families we serve. 

Kathy is one mother who found help through The Concilio. She took part in our PASE program some months back and, through the class, she says, “I learned how to establish a structure at home for activities, homework, and free time. I learned the impact of speaking positively to my children.”

Griselda is another mother who has sought help through The Concilio. Now, she calls the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families program “the best thing that’s happened” to her and her family. After experiencing multiple stressors at once, including divorce and adjusting to life as a single mother, Griselda says she felt a lot of uncertainty and fear. But through HKHF, she has improved her health – mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
