We serve all of Northeast Texas but especially Hunt County and the Lake Tawakoni area. We are the only hope for animals in Southern Hunt County and are often told we are the only rescue to return a phone call or try to help the animals in need in this rural area. Many of our animals are stray, rescued from living on the streets or have been abandoned. How anyone can move and leave a dog behind we don't understand but this happens way too often in this area. We are saving over 250 animals per year and feed on average 80 animals every day. We have become a sanctuary for older dogs that deserve a home no matter their age or adopt-ability and unsocial animals that we are still trying to rehabilitate. We love them all and will care for them no matter what. Recently we have had some Senior dogs adopted and the stories are amazing! We work with individuals or families to prevent ANY animal from going to a high kill shelter. We have also been there for domestic abuse survivors that need to go to a shelter but will not leave their animal behind. We are there to care for their animal at no charge until they can regain suitable housing for themselves and their animal. Your gifts support all of our programs. Saving animals is our passion and helping people and any animal in need is our daily goal.
Our Needs
Our needs continue to change with the economy and the severe over population of dogs and pups across Texas that affect us. Our adoptions are drastically down from the last few years. We are lucky and blessed that animals returned is extremely low. We have always considered our jobs as rescuers to also ensure the long term success of each adoption. We work to enhance the human - animal bond through thoughtful placement of each animal and post-adoption support. We continue to search for Fosters to give our animals a break from outdoor living. We provide all you need, you provide the home and love for a few days or longer! Our greatest need is a permanent and loving HOME for all of our animals and compassionate, long term care for our sanctuary animals.
We strive to continually improve the lives of the animals in our care. Last Summer we added additional shade with permanent shade covers attached to the permanent structure in the large kennels that house the dogs. Additional fans were added giving the dogs more comfort along with raised beds and water tubs for those who like to swim. This winter they will have heat lamps and their structures will be closed to provide more comfort.
We belong to a food bank for rescues but they have not received enough food offers to share enough food with the many rescues that need the assistance. Because of that, we have become part of the food insecure. Just like families, we as a rescue are struggling to feed our dogs. Instead of .15 to .20/lb we paid at the rescue bank, we were paying over $1.00 per lb at reetail until we could establish a wholesale relationship and buy by the truckload. The cost increase is still overwhelming- our average cost is .60/lb.- but dogs are hungry and feeding them quality food is a priority. Funds raised now are going first to maintain an adequate food supply.
Veterinary expenses have also skyrocketed. Spay/neuter has almost doubled from just 3 years ago. Emergency medical issues have always been challenging but we must be ready to save a life with emergency care and of course spay/neuter is an absolute must! Every dollar given goes directly to the animals. We have no Administration salaries and our Board of Directors is volunteer based. Funds raised this year will ensure we can continue to say YES to emergency situations and save as many dogs and pups as possible.
After 20+ years of rescing dogs, part of our rescue has become a Sanctuary to care for dogs that for whatever reason have not been adopted and are now long term residents. So many times, a dog is overlooked and has no behavior or health issues but other times we are challenged to rehabilitate animals with behavior issues like being unsocial or even feral. Sanctuary dogs need the same loving care and attention as all the other very adoptable dogs and we are commited to them for as long as they need us. This part of animal rescue is just as expensive and often the most challenging but we love them all. We would ask that you consider Sponsoring a Sanctuary Dog. A dog like Bob. Bob is 11 years old . He was surrendered when his human father passed away and noone in his family wanted Bob. We have had Bob 3 1/2 years and although he is adoptable as an only dog, he is still here. To care for any dog and cover all of their costs from food to medical to keeping their kennel clean is about $200.00/month. Any gift towards Bob or another Sanctuary Dog is greatly appreciated. We have 20 dogs that are considered Sanctuary dogs. See Paris' story in the Program Section of our profile below as one of our Sanctuary dogs.
