Once Upon a Sensory World!
Our Story
Once upon a time in the heart of North Texas, there was a place built for children who did not quite fit into the typical mold. It was not dreamed up in a castle or a boardroom. It was created by a mother and a teacher who saw families searching for help and believed in a world where all children could be celebrated for exactly who they are.
They called it It’s a Sensory World!
What began as a small sensory gym became something much greater. It became a school. A summer camp. A sensory bus that brings inclusion to children who cannot come to us. Most of all, it became a community. A place where differences are honored, where potential is seen, and where learning is filled with color, creativity, and connection.
At It’s a Sensory World, every child writes a story. These stories are full of brave moments, new milestones, and everyday magic. Whether it is a new word spoken, a friendship formed, or a skill mastered after months of effort, these victories matter. They are real, and they deserve to be celebrated.
Zachary’s Story: A Shared Chapter of Courage and Hope
When Zachary was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, his parents, Carmen and Alan, were overwhelmed. The dreams they had for their twins suddenly felt out of reach. They were told Zachary might never walk, never speak, and would face a lifetime of challenges. Like so many families navigating a new diagnosis, they were scared and unsure of what the future would hold.
But one thing never changed. Zachary was still Zachary. And the Kramers never stopped believing in his potential.
After a difficult start in public school and the added stress of the pandemic, the Kramers found their way to It’s a Sensory World. Here, they discovered a place that didn’t focus on what Zachary could not do, but on what made him who he is. A place that welcomed him with feathers, glitter, and glue. A place that challenged him to use his talker, encouraged friendships, and felt like family.
At our A Million Dreams Gala this spring, Carmen and Alan shared their story with a room full of supporters. They spoke about the dreams they still hold for Zachary. Fewer doctors’ visits. More beach days. A family dinner filled with laughter and stories. A future where Zachary tells us about his own dreams and how he made them happen.
This North Texas Giving Day, we are honored to share their story with you. Because once upon a Sensory World, children like Zachary found a place to belong.
