Make up was never just something you did for yourself, there was always someone telling you what to do, how to do it, and why you’re doing it and for whom. You were doing it to look respectable or feminine or sexy, and always for someone else to perceive you as such. So I decided it wasn’t for me, and actively avoided it. The few times I needed to have a full face for an event or video I paid someone else to do it because I felt like if I did it, I would be giving up and giving in to the pressure that has surrounded me my entire life.
Then Drag 101 happened. Thanks to Miss Venom I was able to use the dreaded makeup, not just to change my face, but to bring out the more masculine features that I had prized but was told I should hide. I was able to use it to create and accentuate my masculinity, and was not surprised to find that it ultimately made me look just like my dad. 47 years of being compared to and told I look “just like my mother” disappeared, and I felt like I was seeing who I was meant to be.
Learning to do drag makeup has let me explore my more masculine and theatrical side, and I see it less as camouflage or decoration now and more as art. It’s still political, though not in the same sense as before. It has let me bring out a side of myself that I never knew I could and given me the confidence to be that guy that makes people laugh a little more, and allowed me to “Bee Myself” in a whole new way. - Nat Burton
I’m not a very outgoing person, and drag 101 made it so I needed to be courageous for a small moment. That initial moment of “I don’t know if I can walk through that door”. Each time I tried and I put my head down and was able to just show up. And each time, because of the people involved I left better than when I began. Zoey, Andrew, and Miss Venom were incredible in helping me start to break down what was forever holding me back.
