SEASON OVERVIEW: "From Amen to Amen"

Following a landmark 40th anniversary season, South Dallas Concert Choir enters Season 41 with renewed artistic vision and cultural purpose. From Amen to Amen is this season’s theme and traces the evolution of Black sacred music from its deepest roots in the traditional church to its most sophisticated expression in jazz, demonstrating how spirituals, gospel, and jazz are interconnected branches of the same cultural tree.

The season's title reflects both its structure and its meaning. "Amen" from the Hebrew word meaning "so be it" or "let it be established" represents affirmation, agreement, and the declaration that what was spoken is true. Season 41 opens with "Gimme That Ole Time Religion," where congregations have concluded prayers and hymns with "Amen" for centuries, and culminates with Wynton Marsalis' Abyssinian Mass, where that same sacred affirmation is expressed through the sophisticated language of jazz. Between these bookends, the season explores the multiplicity of Black sacred expression: classical Christmas repertoire paired with gospel arrangements, multi-generational family talent, and the profound beauty of Dubois's Lenten cantata.

This journey from the prayer meeting to the jazz sanctuary, from lined-out hymns to big band swing reveals an unbroken lineage of affirmation. The word may sound different across centuries and musical styles, but the essential act of saying "yes" to faith, tradition, and cultural identity remains constant.

This season represents SDCC's core mission made manifest: preserving the Black American Spiritual while demonstrating its continuing influence on American music, engaging diverse audiences across the Dallas metroplex, and ensuring that multiple generations carry forward this irreplaceable cultural legacy.
