My WHY!

Why do I support Rays of Light? Well, my story had a very unlikely beginning. On April 27, 2023, my healthy husband of 29 years received a devastating medical diagnosis. We were unsure what the coming months, let alone year, would look like. I resigned from my job and became his full-time caregiver. We leaned into a new "normal."

That October, I received a phone call inviting me to join the Rays of Light Board. My first instinct was to decline the invitation. I was hesitant to take on any responsibilities that might interfere with being completely available for my husband. But, after some discussion, I accepted. 

A few months later, I was asked to consider becoming the organization's Executive Director. By this time, life had settled down a bit, my husband's health was stable, and together we decided that I should accept the position. On April 26, 2024, the eve of the one-year anniversary of the most frightening day of our marriage, I was standing on a stage welcoming 215 guests at the Rays of Light Gala, and my husband was in the audience.

So, why do I support Rays of Light? Every Friday respite program, every Prom, every Summer Splash, and every Alumni Event continues to remind me just how precious life is. The families and children we serve through Rays of Light exhibit courage, strength, resilience, and joy that is beyond compare. They are the super heroes of this story. It is a privilege to be along for this wonderful ride, and play even the tiniest part in their incredible lives.
