For nearly three decades, Team Texas has developed youth climbers both indoors and outdoors. While competition climbing is an important part of our program, we believe the greatest classroom is the natural environment where climbing began.
Outdoor climbing teaches far more than technical skills—it cultivates respect for public lands, appreciation for wildlife and natural landscapes, and a lifelong commitment to responsible recreation.
We are fundraising for $10,000 to expand our Outdoor Climbing Access Program, helping more young climbers experience climbing in the natural environment regardless of their family's financial circumstances.
Since climbing's debut in the Olympic Games, participation in indoor climbing has grown dramatically. While this growth has introduced thousands of young people to the sport, it has also created an unintended disconnect: many youth climbers now spend years training and competing indoors without ever climbing outdoors.
We believe that connection matters. Outdoor climbing provides an opportunity to develop not only as athletes, but as stewards of the landscapes that gave rise to the sport.
Although Team Texas has organized outdoor climbing trips for many years, participation is often limited by financial barriers and logistical constraints. Many families cannot afford the additional travel expenses associated with outdoor climbing, and with only one team-owned passenger van, transportation capacity frequently limits participation. As a result, our trips typically serve about ten athletes per trip despite significantly greater interest.
Donor support would allow Team Texas to expand participation to as many as twenty athletes per trip while reducing costs for every participant. It would also allow us to cover costs for athletes with demonstrated financial need, ensuring that finances are never the reason a young climber misses the opportunity to experience the outdoors.
Each trip combines climbing instruction with education in Leave No Trace principles, stewardship of climbing areas, respect for wildlife habitats, and responsible recreation on public lands. We believe the strongest conservation ethic develops through firsthand experiences in nature.
By introducing young climbers to outdoor climbing in a safe, educational environment, we hope to develop not only skilled athletes, but thoughtful stewards of the places they climb.
Over the course of a twelve-month period, Team Texas will offer three outdoor climbing experiences—a fall trip, a spring trip, and an immersive summer expedition—while expanding participation and removing financial barriers for deserving families.
Through these experiences, we hope to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and help cultivate the next generation of responsible climbers and conservation advocates.
Thank you for your consideration. We would be honored to share more about how your support can help connect more young people with the outdoors while protecting the natural places that inspire our sport.
