Texas is rich with stories, songs, crafts, and foodways the families have shared for generations. These folk arts and folkways are more than traditions —they are living legacies that connect us to who we are, bring people together, and inspire our future
This fall, Texas Folklife is reimagining our youth folk and traditional arts education program through Handed Down in West Dallas. Designed for students in grades 5–8, the program connects young people with tradition bearers who share music, storytelling, crafts, and foodways. Together, they explore the practices that continue to shape our families and communities.
With your support, donations on North Texas Giving Day will help us:
Bring folk artists into classrooms and community spaces to teach students
directly.Support apprenticeships where tradition bearers mentor the next generation.
Host community events and showcases that celebrate the beautiful
cultural mosaic of Texas..Prioritize access for underserved communities, ensuring all young Texans
have the chance to learn, create, and connect through folk and traditional arts.
Your gift ensures that Texas’s cultural treasures — from Conjunto music to quilting, indigenous bead working to cowboy poetry, food traditions to sacred stories — will not only be preserved but also passed down to inspire tomorrow’s leaders.
With your support, Texas Folklife's Handed Down program ensures that these traditions are not just remembered, but lived, celebrated, and passed forward with pride.
