What if changing a child's future started with what's on their lunch tray?
Independence Gardens began as a simple observation: too many children are growing up disconnected from fresh food, where it comes from, how it tastes, & why it matters.
For some children, school lunch isn't simply lunch. It may be one of the most dependable meals they receive that day.
At Food Fight, we've heard student judges say:
“I didn't know chicken looked like this.”
“If we ate this at school, I would eat lunch there every day.”
And the question that stays with us:
“Why don't we have food like this at school?”
We think that question deserves an answer.
So, we're starting a Food Fight.
On September 17, 2026, North Texas Giving Day, Independence Gardens will host Food Fight™: The Culinary School Lunch Showdown at Dallas College Culinary, Pastry & Hospitality Center.
Team Chonnie Richey (Founder, Independence Gardens), led by defending Food Fight Champion Chef RJ Yoakum, will face Team Vince Sims (NBC5), led by Chef Marco Collins, in a fast-paced culinary showdown.
Their challenge: Create a nutritious, delicious school lunch for just $5.
The chefs will race against the clock, incorporate mystery ingredients, & create a meal children would actually choose to eat.
And the judges? Not celebrity chefs. Not food critics.
3rd–5th grade students.
Because when we're talking about the future of school lunch, children deserve a seat at the table.
Why $5?
Schools operate with limited resources to provide meals that meet federal nutrition requirements while managing food costs, labor, preparation, and countless operational realities.
Food Fight isn't about criticizing the hardworking people serving children every day.
It's about asking:
What more could be possible if we invested more in our children?
Could we introduce more children to fresh vegetables?
Could students grow lettuce at school & then learn how to prepare it?
Could better food experiences encourage healthier choices?
Could we reduce food waste because children actually want to eat what's on their trays?
We believe the answer begins with access, education, and experience.
And that's where you come in.
Our Goal: $30,000. 10 Schools. 1,000+ Children.
Food Fight will have a winning chef, but the real victory happens after the competition ends.
Our North Texas Giving Day goal is $30,000 to bring Independence Gardens programming to 10 elementary schools, directly impacting more than 1,000 children.
Your gift supports two experiences:
🌱 The Beanstalk Project™: Through HydroTowers, students don't just hear about where food comes from, they grow it in a sustainable way. A seed becomes a plant. A plant becomes food. And food becomes a hands-on lesson in science, sustainability, nutrition, responsibility, and possibility.
👩🍳 Come and EAT IT™: Our hands-on chef cooking experiences give children the opportunity to touch, taste, prepare, and discover fresh foods. Instead of simply telling children to “eat healthier,” we invite them into the experience and let curiosity do the work.
Together, these programs create a powerful cycle:
Grow it. Know it. Cook it. Taste it.
And maybe even love it.
Your $5 Is More Than $5.
We're calling it the $5 Boost School Lunch Campaign because meaningful change doesn't always begin with a huge donation.
Sometimes it starts with five dollars.
$5 says a child's health and future are worth investing in.
$25 means five people joining the fight.
$100 helps put fresh-food learning into children's hands.
$500 can help bring a Come and EAT IT™ cooking experience to a school.
And larger gifts can help bring the full Independence Gardens experience to an elementary campus.
When hundreds of people make a choice to invest in children, those individual gifts become something much bigger.
They become HydroTowers.
They become cooking experiences.
They become vegetables growing inside schools.
They become a child tasting something for the first time and saying:
“I didn't know I liked that.”
This Is Bigger Than One Lunch.
We know one cooking competition won't solve childhood food insecurity.
One HydroTower won't transform our food system.
And one $5 donation won't change school lunch by itself.
But movements don't begin with everything changing at once.
They begin when enough people decide something should change.
Food Fight brings chefs, children, educators, businesses, farmers, healthcare leaders, parents, and communities around the same table to start a different conversation about fresh food.
The mission of Independence Gardens is simple:
Give every child access to fresh food. #FreshFood4All
This North Texas Giving Day, we're asking you to help us take that mission into 10 more elementary schools and reach more than 1,000 children.
Give $5. Give $50. Give $500. Sponsor a school. Invite five friends to join the fight.
Whatever your gift, you're helping put something powerful into the hands of a child: A seed. A vegetable. A recipe. And the knowledge that fresh, healthy food can be theirs too.
Will you join the Food Fight?
