Amachi: Defend Potential in Greater Dallas

​At Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Dallas, we believe every child has incredible potential—no matter their background or circumstances. Through one-to-one mentorship, we’re not just changing lives—we’re transforming futures, especially in underserved communities across Texas. 

In 2024 alone, we: 

• Created 600+ new mentoring matches
• Supported nearly 1,900 active matches
• Logged over 90,000 volunteer hours

And the impact? It’s powerful: 

97% of our mentees are heading to college, joining the military, or entering the workforce—far surpassing the national average 98% avoided risky behaviors

One program especially close to our hearts is Amachi, which serves children with incarcerated parents. These youth face unique and often overwhelming challenges. Amachi connects them with caring mentors who provide stability, guidance, and—most importantly—hope. For many, it’s the first time they’ve had a consistent, positive adult in their lives. 

We’re thrilled to share that the State of Texas has increased Amachi funding to $7 million, shared among 9 agencies. 

This investment allows us to: 

• Recruit and train more mentors 
• Provide trauma-informed support Expand outreach to families impacted by incarceration 
• Sustain high-quality match support and case management 

But here’s the truth: state funding doesn’t cover everything. It doesn’t fund:  

Activities that close the access gaps or build the social capital youth need to change their trajectory:  

• Enrichment activities like college visits, STEM camps, or leadership workshops  
• Experiences to practice professional soft skills
• Emergency support for families in crisis  
• Skill training to fuel emotional wellbeing  
• Technology access for virtual mentoring
