A Simple Screening Changed My Future

In 2020, during the delays and disruptions of the pandemic, I was slightly behind on my routine mammogram schedule. When additional testing was recommended following the mammogram, I wasn't overly concerned. I had undergone a biopsy before and expected everything would be fine.

A few days later, my doctor called. As soon as he said, "I'm sorry," I knew what he was about to tell me.

I remember thinking, “How can I have a life-altering disease when I feel fine?” My next thought was, “I don't have time for this.”

I was balancing a full-time job, a husband, two teenagers, and a barn full of show cattle. It was my son's senior year of high school, football season was in full swing, and life was already moving at a hectic pace. Cancer simply wasn't part of the plan.

Thankfully, my cancer was found at Stage 1. After meeting with my surgeon, we discussed treatment options and I initially chose a lumpectomy. While additional procedures ultimately led to a mastectomy, early detection made a significant difference in my treatment journey. Following my mastectomy, I didn’t need chemotherapy or radiation.

Many of us, especially busy moms, take care of everyone else before taking care of ourselves. My experience taught me that our health can't always wait.
