This summer, a Reading Buddy at Project Transformation North Texas was reading a book with a young girl who was a little disengaged that day. She was having trouble focusing on the story, and the volunteer could have simply encouraged her to keep going. Instead, she paused and asked a different question: “So, what kind of things are you into?”

The girl’s face immediately lit up, and she nearly yelled with excitement: “Dogs!”

So they went looking for a different book and found one about a puppy with magical superpowers who saves the day. Suddenly, the girl was interested. She wanted to know what happened next. She stayed engaged, read along, and was learning all because her Reading Buddy took the time to get to know her and find something that captured her imagination.

This may seem like a small moment, but it is exactly what we mean when we talk about purposeful relationships at Project Transformation. Volunteers aren’t just helping children learn to read. They are getting to know them, discovering what makes them curious and excited, and reminding them that their interests, ideas, and voices matter. Because sometimes, that is where learning starts.
