This initiative is an expansion of the Foundation's long-standing commitment to developing healthy young people through climbing. Since 2006, the Foundation has strengthened the athlete experience by providing leadership development, mentorship, educational opportunities, community service, fundraising, and programs that support athlete wellbeing beyond technical coaching. We already prioritize goal setting, SafeSport education, injury tracking, peer mentorship through Captains & Crews, youth leadership through our Junior Board, and community-building experiences for athletes and families.
This funding will allow us to build upon that strong foundation by expanding access to evidence-based education in climbing-specific sports nutrition, mental wellbeing, injury prevention, and youth strength and conditioning. These additions address emerging needs facing today's young athletes—including burnout, overuse injuries, unhealthy nutrition messaging, and the increasing mental demands of high-performance sport—while strengthening the knowledge and skills of the coaches, families, and mentors who support them. Rather than creating a new program, this initiative deepens and enhances our existing athlete development strategy by ensuring wellbeing grows alongside excellence.
Success means Team Texas has strengthened the network of support surrounding every athlete in our program. Through this funding, athletes, coaches, and parents will gain access to evidence-based education that creates healthier training environments and promotes long-term wellbeing alongside athletic excellence.
During the year, the Foundation will provide expert-led education in climbing-specific sports nutrition, mental wellbeing, injury prevention, and youth strength and conditioning. Athletes will gain practical skills to support healthy fueling, recovery, injury prevention, and resilience. Coaches will strengthen their knowledge of long-term athlete development, positive coaching practices, and youth wellbeing. Parents will gain tools to better support healthy nutrition, recovery, emotional wellbeing, and sustainable participation in sport.
By the end of the year, Team Texas will have expanded its capacity to deliver evidence-based wellbeing education while strengthening the relationships that help young athletes thrive. Success will be measured through participation and evaluations following educational programming that assess increases in knowledge and confidence across all participant groups.
