Let me explain this photo......it has been a very busy week at Humane Tomorrow so I wanted to feature all three of the dogs in this photo because they each had to have extensive (& expensive) surgery within the past 2 weeks. Neo joined our program when he was just a young severely emaciated puppy and over time it became evident something was not right. He had a grade 4 luxated patella in each of his hind legs as well as growth deformities due to the malnutrition. Last week Neo had a surgery to straighten his bones and fix his kneecaps and the poor guy is having a rough recovery. When River came in she looked like a normal happy girl - but if you watched closely how she walked she was in obvious pain and had a horribly disfigured leg due to an old injury that was never repaired. Her body tried to mend itself but that just created more issues with lots of additional unnecessary bone growth and a ton of joint swelling and pain. The doctor determined an amputation was the best route moving forward as the leg was unrepairable. With poor sweet Boo, a Good Samaritan happened across a horribly matted, emaciated black ball of unrecognizable fur with a horribly disfigured leg..... so disfigured that you couldn't tell if there was a foot or any toes there (spoiler alert: there wasn't). Once the hanging skin was cleaned up a bit it was obvious an amputation would be necessary, but Boo was skin and bones and not a good candidate for surgery. His foster did an amazing job slowly adding weight on until he was deemed healthy enough for an amputation.
Here's the thing.......were it not for Humane Tomorrow and what an amazing organization it is these three dogs would not be here. No shelter could have afforded these surgeries. Most rescues would have understandably said no, sorry, we can't afford to take this on or we don't have the foster base to support their recovery. But not Humane Tomorrow. We will step up for whatever the animals in our program need. I'm proud to be a part of this organization and proud to work with the most amazing fosters and volunteers you've ever met. And the icing on the cake is that as the Medical Director of Humane Tomorrow I get to play a small part in these lucky souls finding the most amazing happy ending!
I hope that you can find it in your heart to donate to our organization and/or share our fundraisers because the more funds we raise the more animals we can save!
