There’s Another Story Happening Beneath the Surface

The city we call home is facing a crisis hidden in plain sight. The commercial sex industry in North Texas generates an estimated $99 million each year, running through storefronts, hotels, and businesses that can look just like any other. Every night, women and girls in our community are exploited within a system built to stay unseen.

But there’s another story happening beneath the surface, too.

It’s a story of resilience. Of hope. Of women and girls choosing, every day, to keep moving forward.

New Friends New Life has been a part of my life long before I ever worked here. Years ago, my mom had the opportunity to do art projects with women and girls in our program. I remember being inspired by the way they expressed themselves through those projects and, most of all, by their resilience. Despite enduring the effects of other people’s brokenness, they still chose to create, to express themselves, and to find hope.

Now, as someone who has the privilege of working at New Friends New Life, I get to see that hope in a different way. I get to see what happens when women and girls have access to resources, support, community, and the opportunity to build a life beyond exploitation.

One of the things I love most about working here is witnessing the million little victories we get to celebrate every day. A new job. A completed goal. A moment of confidence. A hard conversation. A milestone that may seem small from the outside but represents an enormous step forward for someone rebuilding her life.

These moments are the other story happening beneath the surface. And we couldn't do it without a community of changemakers who believe that what happens in our community is our responsibility too.
