A Second Chance for Both Ends of the Leash

I have met so so many amazing shelter dogs. And as I look at their sweet, affectionate, lost but loving eyes and think, Someone adored you once.

And then the harder thought follows: What happened?  What crisis unfolded? What support wasn’t there to keep you with the person you clearly loved?

Over the years, I’ve met so many dogs like that. Dogs who weren’t “broken” or “unwanted” — just caught in the fallout of a human life unraveling. And while the internet is full of keyboard warriors ready to judge an owner they know nothing about, ready to assume the worst, ready to shame instead of understand… the truth is more complicated.

We can’t rescue our way out of a crisis when the people in our community are still living in one. Shelter overpopulation doesn’t start with dogs — it starts with humans who don’t have the stability, resources, or support they need to hold on.

That’s why fostering for Dogs Matter has meant so much to me.

Dogs Matter provides free, temporary foster care for the dogs of people entering substance abuse treatment, plus a 12‑month aftercare program to help reunite pets with their owners after recovery. They step in before a surrender happens. They keep dogs out of shelters. They keep families together. They help people heal without losing the one constant source of love in their lives.

My first Dogs Matter foster was reunited with her owner last week, and watching that moment… it was everything. It was healing on both ends of the leash — the kind of reunion that reminds you why this work matters.

So this year, I’m supporting Dogs Matter for North Texas Giving Day. Because keeping dogs out of shelters starts with keeping people from having to say goodbye.
