There is nothing better than watching the playful antics of baby squirrels!

A squirrel who is nearly full-sized, has a fluffy tail and can run, jump and climb is independent. However, if a baby is found on the ground or a juvenile squirrel continuously approaches and follows people, their mom is probably gone. In this case, you should contact a rehabilitator because the baby is very hungry and needs care.

Squirrel moms are the best about looking out for their babies. If the baby is uninjured give the mom, the chance to relocate them to a new nest. If it’s chilly outside or the baby isn’t fully furred, place them in a shoebox with something warm underneath. Do not cover them up completely or leave them where they are, keep people and pets away and monitor.

  • Wearing gloves place them inside a thick, soft cloth, such as a cloth diaper or fleece scarf or hat (avoid terrycloth).
  • Place the babies, cloth and warmer inside an open small cardboard box in the tree if you know where the nest was and see if mom will come looking for them.
  • If mom does not come by evening, she may be in trouble and you should contact a rehabber for assistance.
