United Through HOPE Denton Flood Recovery

The mission of United Through H.O.P.E. is: "to build strong leaders by focusing on the social skills, metacognitive skills, and soft skills necessary to foster resiliency, independence, and a sense of belonging. UTH believes that all individuals, regardless of disability or circumstance, have the opportunity to become strong leaders when provided with the correct support system and with support beginning in early childhood and continuing through the lifespan. The mission expanded to include transition aged, with the recent grand opening of our suite of Transitional programs including the Transitional Housing program for adults 18 and older who have high functioning social skills but still need support, guidance, and leadership to launch into the next phase of their life."

Our neurodivergent son, who also has an intellectual disability, has participated in a variety of UTH programs almost since it started 13 years ago. We have seen firsthand the far-reaching benefits of what UTH provides (at a very affordable rate). And he is only one of the many, many members Dr. Harrier and her staff tirelessly serve week in and week out. On June 3 the neighborhood where their main programming house is, and where they keep the two vehicles that they use to transport members to events all over the metroplex, was significantly flooded during a rainstorm. The two vehicles were totaled and the house will need significant flood remediation and renovation to be usable again. And all this is happening during the summer when they provide extensive programming while the kids aren't in school. The city of Denton has not provided any assistance, even though the flooding is due in large part to chronic city drainage issues (this is not the first time they have been flooded), and insurance will not nearly cover all the expenses they are incurring as a result of the flood. The need is so great and the feeling of discouragement is so profound.
