This fall, Garland ISD teachers sent the Garland ISD Education Foundation 433 grant requests.
The principal at Liberty Grove Elementary wanted an outdoor hammock garden where students could take a book outside and read. A forensic science teacher at North Garland High wanted a crime-scene setup so her students could work a case instead of just reading about one. A counselor at Couch Collegiate Prep wanted parts for a bike shop where 3rd through 5th graders repair donated bikes and give them to kids who need a way to get to school.
Each of those ideas became real because of a GEF grant. Teachers sent us 433 grant requests this fall. Help us fund 20 more for Garland ISD classrooms.
Our goal: fund 20 more teacher grants this year.
How grants work
Garland ISD educators can apply for up to $1,000 for a single classroom, up to $2,000 for a grade level or department, and up to $3,000 for a campus or district program. Community volunteers on our grants committee read and score every application. Then we show up in classrooms with big checks and surprise the winners. (Watch the video above. It’s the best part of our year.)
What your gift does
$50 helps complete a classroom supply request. Many teacher requests are under $500.
$250 helps a first-year teacher set up a welcoming classroom.
$1,000 fully funds a classroom grant.
$2,000 funds a grade-level or department grant.
$3,000 funds a campus-wide grant.
Gifts to this campaign go to teacher grants for Garland ISD classrooms in Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse.
Why it matters
Teacher requests range from colored pencils and classroom libraries to VR headsets, makerspaces, school gardens, and hands-on career training equipment. Some are about academics. Some are about giving a kid a reason to show up. All of them come from the people who know our students best.
A grant also tells a teacher that their community believes in their idea. We’ve watched teachers laugh, cry, and hug strangers when we hand them a check.
