Help Me Protect Raptors and the Blackland Prairie!

Since 2018, I have had the privilege of volunteering with the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center—and for the past four years, I’ve also served on the Board of Directors. In that time, I’ve worked hands-on in the rehabilitation hospital, helping care for injured and orphaned raptors, and in the education department, teaching children the vital role these birds of prey play in keeping our ecosystems balanced.

Every day, the Raptor Center provides life-saving medical care for up to 800 raptors annually, with a release success rate of 75%—well above the national average. These magnificent birds, from tiny screech owls to bald eagles, come to us suffering from car strikes, electrocution, poisoning, and other human-caused injuries. Thanks to expert veterinary care and thousands of volunteer hours, most of them recover and are released back into the wild where they belong.

But our work doesn’t stop there. On our 66-acre preserve along Lake Lavon, we are restoring one of the most endangered ecosystems in the United States—the Blackland Prairie, of which less than 1% remains. And through over 200 education programs each year, we inspire more than 30,000 children and adults to become stewards of the land and protect the wildlife that depends on it.
