Statistics show that Black women in particular suffer disproportionately poor outcomes from breast cancer. For example, while Black women are screened at a higher percentage for breast cancer than white women, the mortality rate among Black women is higher than the mortality rate for white women. These inequities can often be attributed to low income, low health literacy, or lack of adequate health insurance. Our programs, focusing on awareness and early intervention strategies, will help to reduce these disparities by educating the community and advocating for appropriate, expedient medical care.
Funding will help us educate the women in high-risk communities and to advocate for them. We plan to use funding to help women find consistent care with physicians they trust, schedule follow up appointments, and arrange for transportation to and from appointments. Also, funding will help uninsured and underinsured pay for critical medical tests including mammograms, MRIs, biopsies, items needed during treatment and/or after surgery, like human and synthetic wigs, prothesis, and mastectomy bras.
Virginia Mae King Foundation is committed to providing fair and compassionate care, within the scope of professional abilities to ensure that every patients voice is heard and both the uninsured and underinsured will have access to necessary quality healthcare. A person should not have to choose between a meal for their family or paying for quality healthcare.
