The Heights Ellis County Family Resources was started in 2018 when a group of community leaders came together to address the reality of domestic violence in Ellis County. The original vision was to provide a true safe house that was dedicated to providing a safe place for women and children who were in the midst of life threatening situations. In the early stages of researching national demographics, The Heights discovered only 15% of victims actually need a place to stay. Most women stay with family or friends to find safety, but recovering from abuse takes more than safety. As a result, The Heights began to broaden its vision to not only provide a safe house, but to also include wholistic services to its clients. This decision helped The Heights better serve those they provide shelter to, and also reach the other 85% of its targeted demographic who do not stay in their safe house. After 2 years of planning, services began to be offered to clients in 2020.
More About Who We Are:
Multi-Agency Center:
Currently, victims of family abuse in Ellis County need to go to 15-20 different places to get their needs met. Our heart is to unite other nonprofits together to serve the victims of family abuse all together in one place. We are not here to replace or compete with other nonprofits. We provide a place for women and children to tell their story one time and receive all the help they need.
National Affiliation:
The Heights is a member of Alliance For Hope International, and we embody the family justice center model. We are one of about 150 centers who are a part of the affiliation in the United States. The family justice center model has been designated as a best-practice model for family abuse intervention and prevention by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Our Mission is to provide victims of family abuse with streamlined services that guide them to safety and hope.
Your support helps us provide safety, healing, and hope to survivors of domestic abuse. Below are our current areas of greatest need:
1. Camp Hope (Children’s Summer Camp Program)
Help children heal through joy, connection, and safe fun.
Camp Hope is a trauma-informed summer program designed for children impacted by domestic abuse. Your donation can provide meals, transportation, camp supplies, therapeutic activities, and meaningful experiences that give these children a chance to just be kids again.
2. General Operations
Keep our mission moving forward every day.
Support for general operations ensures The Heights can continue providing advocacy, education, outreach, and 24/7 support services. This includes staff wages, administrative costs, training, utilities, and day-to-day expenses that keep our doors open and services running smoothly.
3. Emergency Shelter Operations
Give immediate safety and stability to those fleeing abuse.
We are working toward establishing Ellis County’s first emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence. Donations will help with shelter staffing, facility preparation, security, food, clothing, hygiene products, and other necessities that ensure survivors can begin their healing journey in a safe, supportive environment.
We are committed to ensuring that every policy enacted reflects democratic principles of equity and justice.
We understand that enacting policy in a just and equitable manner considers critical issues of implicit bias and discrimination that requires concerted and purposeful action.
We believe that bringing together Council, staff and other partners with differing backgrounds and life experiences will enhance our ability to increase opportunities for all arts service organizations to succeed.
Policies, programs, and activities will be administered to identify and avoid discrimination and barriers to access, and to avoid disproportionately high and adverse effects on communities of color.
Accountability to our grantees is of central importance to us. We understand the significance of evaluating the impact of our policy making on grantees over time and utilizing this evaluation in the development of new policy initiatives. We are committed to the just and equitable disbursement of resources.
We will obtain the following information when relevant and appropriate in order to utilize data to evaluate the impact of our equity goals: population served and/or affected by race, color, national origin, and income level, which will include diverse communities across the state such as: communities of color, racially and ethnically diverse individuals, tribal communities, immigrant and refugee communities, and communities that have principal languages other than English.
