Pet ownership equates to companionship for many seniors. Without their furry or feathered companions, many seniors would spend days and weeks at a time alone. SPAN works to keep these companion relationships intact for as long as possible. There are tangible benefits from having a companion animal. Pet owners derive happiness and emotional support from their pets. Pet ownership provides stress relief and decreases anxiety and depression for the majority of pet owners. At least one-third of pet owners receive some health benefits such as increased exercise and lower blood pressure. A 2015 study out of George Mason University calculated an $11.7 billion savings in US healthcare costs as a result of pet ownership.
SPAN's Values and Beliefs:
-We deeply respect senior citizens and value their ability to remain in their homes in safety and with dignity and happiness
-We care about companion animals and believe they too deserve compassionate care and safe homes.
-We believe companion animals are like family members for seniors and are vitally important to seniors' happiness and psychological well being
-For seniors, we believe being able to properly maintain and keep a beloved companion animal provides joy and dignity
-We believe seniors should not have to choose between meeting their own personal needs for food and medicine and maintaining/keeping their companion animal.
