Needs
We identified four barriers to accessing health and well-being in our communities:
**LANGUAGE**
- 81% of Hispanic adults prefer Spanish-speaking health professionals. (PRC, 2022)
- Only 7% of U.S. doctors are Hispanic. (PRC, 2022)
**SOCIAL CAPITAL**
- Hispanic immigrants, especially women, face greater social isolation, leading to worse health outcomes (CDC, 2021).
**INCOME**
- 25% of U.S. Hispanics live below the poverty line.
- 20% lack health insurance (KFF, 2021).
**CULTURE**
- Fear and shame are key health barriers.
- Issues like immigration status and cultural taboos about medical check-ups create barriers (NLM, 2017).
These barriers are causing:
- 60% of people in the U.S. have at least one chronic illness (CDC, 2023).
- Cancer is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among Hispanics in the U.S. (ACS, 2022).
- Suicidal thoughts reach 23% among Hispanics (CDC, 2021)
The good news is that lifestyle choices and comprehensive health behavior changes represent 34% of the person’s health (Hood, et al 2016).
