Our Needs

ROSAesROJO effectively tackles wellness & prevention with culturally relevant content for Hispanic women in North TX. We're a cultural broker agency that provides education, resources & mentorship to a community living in poverty.

Thanks to your support we will be able to continuously deliver wellness and cancer prevention education to Hispanic women in North Texas, creating a ripple effect among their families and communities.

Thank you for helping us continue our work during this unprecedented time and create a more healthy and resilient Hispanic community!!!

Mission

ROSAesROJO delivers health and well-being education to Hispanic women and their families in the U.S. by creating positive health communities where culturally tailored and accessible chronic disease prevention programs are at the center.

We use four pillars to drive equitable whole health behavioral change: Nutrition, Mental Health, Physical Activity, and Empowered Health.

ROSAesROJO improves Hispanics’ health disparities through culturally tailored workshops/mentoring (“The Rojo Way”) and a virtual community (“SuperVive Comunidad”) based on an App . We are not going to treat our way out of chronic diseases and unhealthy behaviors that are diminishing the dignity of life of Hispanics living in the US. Instead, we want to know and educate how to prevent them and empower our community to make it possible.

Needs

We identified four barriers to accessing health and well-being in our communities:

**LANGUAGE**

- 81% of Hispanic adults prefer Spanish-speaking health professionals. (PRC, 2022)

- Only 7% of U.S. doctors are Hispanic. (PRC, 2022)

**SOCIAL CAPITAL**

- Hispanic immigrants, especially women, face greater social isolation, leading to worse health outcomes (CDC, 2021).

**INCOME**

- 25% of U.S. Hispanics live below the poverty line.

- 20% lack health insurance (KFF, 2021).

**CULTURE**

- Fear and shame are key health barriers.

- Issues like immigration status and cultural taboos about medical check-ups create barriers (NLM, 2017).

These barriers are causing:

- 60% of people in the U.S. have at least one chronic illness (CDC, 2023).

- Cancer is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among Hispanics in the U.S. (ACS, 2022).

- Suicidal thoughts reach 23% among Hispanics (CDC, 2021)

The good news is that lifestyle choices and comprehensive health behavior changes represent 34% of the person’s health (Hood, et al 2016).

Equity Statement

As an organization serving a minority group, ROSAesROJO's mission inherently considers racial equity. As part of our philosophy, we have adapted the concept of Cultural Humility as the "ability to maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the person." That philosophy promotes and has a sense of respect, humility, reverence, and pride to and for the roots of all the women we served.

In addition, 100% of our staff and 88% of our board members are Hispanics, echoing the population served.

Within the board and team is reflected not only the racial equity but the gender inclusion. 75% of the board members and 85% of the team are women. ROSAesROJO also looks for balancing different ages and backgrounds in the board and team makeup.

ROSAesROJO incorporated to the Board of Directors, the first one of its past constituents, to elevate their voices and priorities.
