Mount Vernon Music's five strategies to fulfill our mission:
- Community Concerts with the highest quality in programming of live chamber music.
- Youth Outreach includes in-school clinics by expert players, and age-tailored programs of original musical stories with visual art and narration.
- Musical Lifelines brightens the lives of people in long-term care facilities with performances by professional musicians.
- Scholarship Assistance for Young Musicians has awarded more than $40,000 to talented youth.
- Commissioning and Publishing of compelling new works creates new opportunities for musical experience.
Since Mount Vernon Music receives support from donors throughout the DFW area and beyond, each year we bring encore performances of our regular subscription concerts to venues throughout the metroplex. In the 2026-2027 season, this includes concerts in Dallas and Arlington.

Music’s Transformative Power

The sunny Divertimento by Dvořák protégé Erwin Schulhoff betrays no trace of the terror he later faced in a Nazi concentration camp, while American George Rochberg responded to personal tragedy by radically changing the way he composed, leading to his achingly beautiful tribute to Pachelbel’s famous Canon. Despite grief and prejudice and life’s hardest obstacles, great artists leave us their inspiring legacy.

Under the Spell of Song

His voice thrilled us last season, so Mount Vernon Music is pleased to welcome back bass-baritone singer Leon Turner for Samuel Barber’s darkly beautiful Dover Beach, and selections from Franz Schubert’s epic song cycle Die Winterreise. The program also includes enchanting versions of two familiar songs arranged by violin virtuoso Ray Chen and Japanese composer Toro Takemitsu.

In Harmony with the Listener

Composer Howard Hanson was the first director of the Eastman School of Music. Calling music “a social force,” and “a divinely great art,” Hanson worked to reconcile the distance between those writing music and their audiences. The Concerto da Camera in c for Piano and String Quartet by this preeminent American Romantic composer shares the program with music by Beethoven’s assistant Ferdinand Ries, Romani folk music, and more.

Masters of Harmony

From Haydn to Strauss, Mozart to Mendelssohn, this program takes us back to our musical roots with works by familiar masters. Come and be dazzled by the virtuosity of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G minor, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, and the touching introduction to Richard Strauss’ opera Capriccio.
