Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County: Delivering More Than a Meal Since 1973
Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that began in 1973 as a partnership among 11 faith-based groups in downtown Fort Worth, united by a common goal: to deliver food to the elderly. Today, we serve all of Tarrant County, preparing and delivering approximately 1.1 million meals each year to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.
Through home-delivered meals, professional case management, congregate meals at senior centers, and other vital services, we address food insecurity and help elderly, disabled, and homebound individuals remain independent in their own homes—surrounded by comfort, dignity, and a lifetime of memories.
Most of our clients have lived in their homes for decades and feel safest there. However, due to age or illness, many can no longer live alone without assistance. Without our support, they would likely face institutional care. Our mission is to keep them where they want to be—for as long as possible.
While some clients need our services temporarily as they recover from illness or hospitalization, others rely on us long term. In every case, we are there to meet their needs with compassion and consistency.
Unfortunately, the need is great. In a national study on senior hunger, Texas ranked fourth highest in the number of older adults who go to bed hungry. Yet, for less than the cost of one day in a hospital—or six days in a nursing home—we can provide a year’s worth of meals to one homebound individual. In fact, the Center for Effective Government reports that every dollar invested in Meals On Wheels saves up to $50 in Medicaid spending, underscoring the value of our work for both clients and taxpayers.
Our mission is powered by more than 3,300 dedicated volunteers who drive over 1.2 million miles each year. They deliver not just meals, but hope, dignity, and a daily safety check—providing peace of mind for clients and their families alike.
We also recognize the special bond between our clients and their pets. Through our Companion Pet Meals program, we provide dog and cat food to clients who are unable to care for their pets on their own. These beloved companions offer comfort and connection in otherwise lonely circumstances. As funding allows, we also assist with veterinary care and grooming. Your gift—of any amount—can be designated to the Companion Pet Meals program to ensure these cherished pets continue to thrive. Simply note your designation when making a donation.
With your support, we’re building a community where aging with dignity is possible—for everyone.
To enable people to live with dignity and independence by offering community support through nutritious meals and coordinated services that improve well-being.
Our priority is always meeting the nutritional needs of our clients, so funding for meals is our biggest need. Each meal costs just $8 to prepare, package and deliver. That's only $2,080 to feed a person for an entire year! Each fully-cooked meal in planned by a licensed, registered dietitian, and meets all of the nutritional guidelines established by the U.S. Government.
We also need funding for our Client Assistance program to provide items like walkers, lift chairs, air conditioners, heaters, fans, toilet paper, adult incontinent supplies, personal hygiene products, and much more! These items are funded by donor-designed gifts and do not impact our ability to provide lifesaving meals to those in need. Please consider designating an additional gift to our Client Assistance program today. Simply indicate in the notes section of the donation form that you are designating all or a portion of your gift to the Client Assistance program.
Plus, your designated gift in any amount to our Companion Pet Meals program will help provide dog and cat food to lonely clients who do not have the resources to provide proper care and nutrition to their beloved companion pets. Simply indicate in the notes section of the donation form that you are designating all or a portion of your gift to the Companion Pet Meals program.
