The Texas Nursing Workforce Commission estimates a shortage of 60,000 Registered Nurses in Texas by 2030. This represents a critical shortfall of 20% of the nurses needed to ensure quality healthcare in Texas. The shortage of front-line nurses in DFW area hospitals during pandemic waves is even more critical. One graduating JHG Texas Nursing Scholar added to the workforce frees up capacity for 3 hospital beds. At the rate of 3 hospital beds per nurse and assuming an average bed occupancy of 3 weeks per COVID patient, our 40 JHG Texas nurse graduates help ensure potential hospital bed capacity to care for over 2,000 COVID-19 patients annually! And we have more JHG Texas Nursing Scholars in the academic pipeline to graduate each year!
JHG Texas responds to the projected Texas nursing shortage by developing and awarding JHG Texas Nursing Scholarships to highly qualified nursing students who would otherwise be unable to cover the estimated $28,000 annual cost to earn a BSN at TWU or UTA Colleges of Nursing. Leading area hospitals seek to hire RNs who have earned a 4-year BSN to ensure the best quality health care. JHG Texas not only develops and provides scholarships at nursing schools, it also supports student nurses along their career path by providing free academic tutoring and career building resources. 100 JHG Texas Nursing Scholarships have been awarded over the past six years. Looking forward, our 5-Year plan envisages awarding a cumulative total of over 200 JHG Texas Nursing Scholarships. Our vision is to meet the needs of our healthcare system with an adequate supply of nurses, to ensure a healthier North Texas. For more information, please visit https://www.jhgscholars.org
