I. Traditional scholarship program:
1. Memorial Scholarship Award: Recognizes a talented high school senior who plans to major in music.
2. Senior Scholarship Award: Available to students who have participated in various musical activities throughout their high school years (grades 9 through 12). Recipients of the Senior Scholarship Award need not plan to major in music.
Applicants must write a short essay explaining his/her interest in music, any musical achievements, and goals for music study in college. In the event there is a large number of applicants, students must be prepared to audition before the Scholarship Committee, where each student performs two pieces by established composers from different eras of musical composition.
II. Community Service Award:
A $500 scholarship given to ONE graduating senior of any Fort Worth public or private (including homeschool) high school OR a student of a FWMTA teacher. This award honors the student who has demonstrated service to the community in a meaningful way. The community service must be music-based, and the recipient of this award may not also be awarded either the Senior or the Memorial Scholarship.
The Community Service Award applicant must be nominated by a teacher or service organization. In addition, the student must have 2 letters of recommendation: one letter from the student’s teacher (in any subject, including conductors of ensembles); and one letter from a service organization.
The Fort Worth Music Teachers Association aims to further the art of music through teaching, performance, composition and scholarly research.
