The Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks exists to ensure that children and teens with mobility challenges have access to the life-changing benefits of sports. Through coaching fundamentals, developmental instruction, and national-level competition, we inspire young athletes to embrace active lifestyles, build resilience, and realize their full potential, both on and off the court.

We are the only youth wheelchair basketball program in North Texas, serving approximately 50 athletes each year. Our four co-ed teams provide age-appropriate instruction and competitive opportunities for players at every level—from novice to elite. Led by dedicated volunteer coaches with extensive experience, including former collegiate and Team USA athletes, our program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and personal growth.

  • Our Futures Team is for kids ages 5-8. Futures coaches focus on introducing the fundamentals of wheelchair basketball through individualized instruction and skill-building activities.
  • Our Prep Team is for athletes ages 9-13. They play on an 8.5-foot goal and compete in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Juniors Prep Division.
  • Our two Varsity Teams, Varsity White and Varsity Blue, are for athletes ages 14-18. They play on a 10-foot goal and compete in the NWBA Juniors Varsity Division.

For children and teens with physical disabilities, wheelchair basketball is more than just a game — it’s a pathway to confidence, health, friendship, and opportunity. Research on adaptive sports participation for youth with physical disabilities consistently shows positive impacts across physical health, mental health, social development, academic engagement, independence, and long-term employment outcomes.

When families join the Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks, they become part of a supportive community built on shared experiences and mutual encouragement. Most of our families are navigating complex medical needs, therapy schedules, and constant advocacy for their children in schools, healthcare settings, and everyday life. With your support, our program can continue to be a place where athletes and families come to play, grow, connect, and thrive.

Help us make the Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks accessible to every athlete and family we serve!

Giving Activity

Mission

Our mission is to transform lives by providing access to wheelchair basketball, unlocking the power of team sports for North Texas children with physical disabilities. Through coaching fundamentals, developmental instruction, and national-level competition, we inspire young athletes to embrace active lifestyles, build resilience, and realize their full potential both on and off the court.

Needs

The Dallas Junior Mavericks have a fundraising goal of $50,000 for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Funds are required for gym rental fees, tournament entry fees, equipment, and travel costs.

Equipment: Basketball wheelchairs are custom-built athletic equipment engineered to help athletes move quickly, turn sharply, absorb impacts, and compete safely. We maintain a small inventory of chairs, but our ability to recruit and accommodate new athletes is limited. Loaning out program chairs allows new athletes joining our program to learn the game and participate in practices and games before investing in a chair of their own. The average cost of one new chair is $3,500-5,000. Adding 1-2 new chairs per season will ensure we can welcome any child who wants to join the Mavs!

Travel: Wheelchair basketball is not offered in local schools or rec leagues, and competition requires extensive travel. There are approximately 50 teams per junior division in the nation. Each of our teams competes in 4-6 tournaments each season, playing 3-5 games per tournament. Tournament travel typically includes 2 nights in a hotel, fuel if the tournament is within driving distance, or airfare for each athlete and a guardian. This adds up to several thousand dollars per athlete per season, putting participation out of reach for many.

Join us in our commitment to ensuring every eligible athlete has the opportunity to compete, grow, and belong!

Equity Statement

We are committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment where every athlete has the opportunity to participate, grow, and succeed. Guided by our values of community, accessibility, inclusion, accountability, empowerment, and collaboration, we strive to remove barriers, celebrate individual experiences, and ensure all athletes and families feel welcomed, respected, and supported. Through adaptive sports, we work to create meaningful opportunities that build confidence, connection, and lifelong success both on and off the court.
