THE ROOTS OF OUR STORY

In 1921, WB Carrell, MD and a group of Texas Masons saw a need for a charity hospital for crippled children and founded the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) - now known as Scottish Rite for Children (SRC) a world-renowned institution. Now, 100 years later, our organization is stepping up to help young people aging out of charity care access medically necessary orthopedic care.

CARRELL CARE COMMUNITY PARTNERS was founded by a group of Dallas orthopedic surgeons and philanthropists to continue the vision of Dr. W.B. Carrell to address the needs of young people aging out of charity care and unable to afford medically necessary orthopedic care because they have fallen into the health insurance coverage gap. 

This....is where Carrell Care steps in to help young recipients access the necessary orthopedic care they need.

The very children that Dr. W.B. Carrell sought to help 100 years ago-are now facing a new issue. These young patients are "aging out" of charity care hospitals like Scottish Rite for Children, Shriner's Children - having to face the fact that they have fallen into the current "health insurance coverage gap" when Texas and 9 other states did not expand Medicaid. While some young Texans like aging out foster youth can qualify for Medicaid, their plans exclude Durable Medical Equipment in the state of Texas. 

These young people are often left with significant orthopedic needs not met by government assistance or insurance after they "age out" on their 18th birthday.

THE CARRELL CARE MISSION

Carrell Care's mission is to assist young people, age 16-30, by providing financial aid for medically necessary orthopedic care including durable medical equipment who fall 200% of the FPL, are in the health insurance coverage gap and meet the qualifications for the program.

INTRODUCING THE NEW EXO SYM PROGRAM

Our newest program has been an incredible success already changing the lives of so many young people across the country. Carrell Care's ExoSym Pilot program is truly life changing -this state of the art device helps these young people to avoid amputation, significantly reduce pain and get them back on track to achieving their education and career goals. 

GIVING A LEG UP- MEET ONE OF OUR 2026 RECIPIENTS

Our financial aid recipients are young people age 16-30 who are dealing with orthopedic congenital conditions, trauma injuries and the related deformities, paralysis and in some cases facing single or double amputations.  In assisting these recipients to gain access to medically necessary orthopedic care- that is far outside their means- Carrell Care helps to empower these young folks whose lives have been interrupted by their pain and mobility issues to now continue their pursuit of higher education and the careers they have dreamed of. 

Carrell Care's 2026 Exo Sym recipients are so grateful to be a part of this program and report back that thanks to their new Exo Sym device the very real obstacle of lack of mobility, significant pain has now been removed. This is why we exist- hearing their stories that they are now able to continue on the journey to achieving their dreams- resume their education, pursue post graduate degrees- so that they can reach their full potential of becoming physicians, physical therapists, nurses, attorneys, educators, and so much more. Our organization is thrilled to help these young people THRIVE!
