Baptist News Global is a reader-supported, online independent news organization that provides original and curated news, opinion and analysis about matters of faith. Our vision is to pursue truth through responsible journalism that cultivates change-making conversations about Christianity and culture among Baptists and other inquisitive people of faith. We focus on the people, events and ideas shaping American religion and culture. Our values are independence, integrity, trustworthiness, excellence, justice, and curiosity.
Baptist News Global is the successor organization to two trailblazing publications of the 19th and 20th centuries: the Religious Herald, founded in Virginia in 1828 and Associated Baptist Press, founded in Tennessee in 1990. The Religious Herald was the voice of Baptists in Virginia. Associated Baptist Press was the only independent news service created by and for Baptists. In 2013, Associated Baptist Press and the Religious Herald merged to form Baptist News Global.
At Baptist News Global we strive to be “free” and “faithful” - free in that we have no restraints to keep us from publishing stories that must be told without condition or favor, and faithful in that we tell the truth and keep faith with our readers. But we also are faith-full in that we approach the news from a faith perspective, one rooted in justice and inclusion and the love of Jesus.
Our readership is the growing number of progressive Christians and others who appreciate our approach for providing compelling journalism on topics pertinent to people of faith. BNG’s growth and influence is represented by growth in readership. During 2024 we had 5.2 million pageviews and published 1,734 pieces of original content. We will exceed that number in 2025.
BNG consistently explores ways to enhance our work and increase the number of those who look to us for information and inspiration. Our news, opinion and analysis pieces are foundational to our work, and we continue to seek diversity in our writers. Our webinars that feature livestreamed lectures and panel discussions are gaining in popularity. We also launched our first podcast series in August 2024, "Stuck in the Middle with You." Finally, our social media presence has expanded greatly, and we are now on TikTok and Instragram, in addition to our presence on Facebook and X.
Currently, Baptist News Global has a growing and devoted community of readers and donors who span denominations, geography and even ideology. Baptist News Global isn’t just for Baptists anymore. Together, we’re on a journey that stirs up change-making conversations and brings people together in healthy dialogue. We are a truly independent professional news organization run by real journalists who report to a board of directors.
To inform and inspire readers with news, opinion and analysis that engages them to grow in faith and wrestle with what it means to live and serve faithfully in a rapidly changing world.
As a reader-supported, nonprofit news organization, Baptist News Global relies on reader contributions for two thirds of its annual budget. Our current needs include:
1. Funds to increase the diversity of freelance writers who provide compelling journalism.
2. Increased funding for more freelance writers to provide global coverage.
3. Increased support for fundraising infrastructure and sustainability projects.
4. Additional funding for our Clemons Fellows Program, a graduate level fellowship for journalism students.
Baptist News Global seeks to be fully inclusive of all people as made in the image of God and worthy of love and respect. We seek diverse representation on our board and in our writers, including representation of race, gender, sexual orientation, age and geography. We likewise seek to publish content that assumes the inherent worth of all people.
