In 2024, BCSAVE announced that we were merging with All Border Collie Rescue (ABCR). As you may or may not know, in 2018, BCSAVE was formed when ABCR changed its area of operation to the Houston/ Harris County area. The Dallas and Austin based volunteers formed BCSAVE to continue to serve the DFW and Austin areas. Since then, both ABCR and BCSAVE have continued to work together to save Border Collies and Border Collie mixes throughout Texas and beyond.
ABCR and BCSAVE continued to work together closely to help BCs in and around Texas. As resources became scarcer and dogs in need have became more plentiful, in order to be more effective, ABCR and BCSAVE decided to merge into one large organization to better serve BCs in need. We continued to operate as two rescues as we slowly worked to combine our operations internally.
Even with all that going on, BCSAVE continued to save and rescue Border Collies in Texas and beyond. In 2024, BCSAVE alone saved 127 dogs, including the first group of 29 Heartland pups, a hoarding case with (as of 2025) over 100 dogs! We adopted over 90 dogs and raised over $98,500, including $25,000 during last year's campaign to buy our BCSAVE rescue van. We spent over $112,000 on medical expenses, supplies, food, and other items for the rescue - though NO salaries, as we are a small but mighty group of ALL volunteers!
2025 is turning into our busiest year ever! So far, BCSAVE and ACBR have adopted over 170 dogs to families across the US. We've rescued nearly 200 pups so far, and have continued to rescue, foster and adopt our Heartland pups - adopting out another 20 or so, and currently working on the last 40. These pups are feral and semi-feral, but once in foster care have really opened up and become fantastic family dogs to folks all across the US. And it is only with the help of our generous supporters, fosters, transporters, volunteers and social media sharers that we are able to adopt and help as many as we have.
Our Needs
Rescue is a costly proposition. Of the dogs we save, many are heartworm positive, have major medical issues, suffered from abuse or neglect and/ or had traumatic behavioral problems and have to rehabilitated both physically and/or behaviorally. We work with fantastic veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists all over TX who give us great rates, but as a small non-profit, we rely on the generosity of our donors to ensure we can assist all the dogs in our care. Nearly ALL of our volunteers work full-time jobs so BCSAVE is a labor of love. Weekends, evenings, early mornings - whenever we can squeeze time in to make sure we can help as many dogs as we can.
It takes a village to do what we do, and we have the best village out there. Thank you for taking the time to learn about BCSAVE and share our journey with us!
