Arts Unlimited Southwest is a 501(c)(3) community music school in Cleburne, Texas, established in September 2011. Teachers seek to provide students of varying ages with meaningful experiences in music and the arts in their after-school hours. The program encourages positive relationships among students and teachers in a safe environment during hours when so many children are at risk because they are alone and unsupervised when they leave school.
Over the years, Verified Volunteers have done teacher and volunteer background checks. Teachers, most of whom have studied to a post-graduate level, encourage each child to perform optimally by being friendly and encouraging and by equipping themselves with methodologies that promote their students' growth as musicians and as people.
During the summers, we have the most fun exploring other areas of the arts along with the music: sewing, stained glass, vegetarian cooking, ukulele, and puppetry. This year, we ventured into robotics and programming, which was an immediate success. Through July, we laughed, played games, ate, worshipped, and shared stories.
Our Needs
Through the scholarship program at AUSW, many families without resources have been able to study music during the after-school hours and in the summer months, participating in recitals and community outreach programs. Many have gone on to enrich their high school music programs and even become professional musicians. Our donors may take much of the credit for past student successes.
Hence, scholarships are among the requests we make. Investments for new programs, namely, a child care initiative (on the books for the next school year) that provides a meal for the children, help with homework through a partnership with the local university, and the opportunity to study an instrument of their choice.
