AAUW TARRANT COUNTY BRANCH HISTORY

We are celebrating our 51st year of meeting the needs of women and girls this year! Founded in 1971, with Kathryn Bryan as President, the Tarrant County Branch of the AAUW (AAUW TCB) was formed to meet the needs of working women, as well as women of all backgrounds, who wanted to make a difference in the community. For the past 50 years AAUW TCB has been a pioneer in mentoring young women and encouraging them to further their education.

Our Needs

In 2023 - 2024, we will focus on assisting middle and high school girls with Girls Inc to provide greatest needs for selected Fort Worth Independent School District students.  We will also sponsor our 21st Sister to Sister Summit, a day workshop focused on self-esteem and continuing education for middle school girls.  This year we will be cooperating with Fort Worth ISD and Texas Wesleyan University to offer this event.

AAUW TCB will continue to provide scholarship funds for three deserving students at Tarrant County College.

Our Initiatives

 Scholarships

AAUW TCB has endowed Scholarships with the Tarrant County College Foundation since 1998. After starting with $25,000, the endowment was fully funded in 2022.  AAUW TCB currently offers three scholarships for each semester to deserving students at Tarrant County College.  Now we are pursuing a scholarship award program with Tarleton!

Community Service Groups

As COVID-19 restriction ease, AAUW TCB will begin again its monthly Community Service Group. This group works in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations to make a difference in the community through volunteerism. Some of the projects AAUW-TCB members have participated in were: volunteering at the Tarrant Area Food Bank, packing Holiday Gift Bags for the Homeless, and serving at a mobile food pantry. AAUW TCB has supported The Women's Center since 1995, both financially and through advocacy. They have a sign sponsor and a team in the Victory Over Violence Walk/Run.

GIRLS INC SHOWER

For the past five years, AAUW TCB has joined other sponsors to support Girls Inc as it seeks to level the playing field for college-bound high school graduates in Girls Inc programs. Most of the girls are the first in their families to attend college. Each year the members of AAUW TCB sponsor one girl and fulfill her "wish list". In July 2022, college shower sponsors provided about 60 girls with dorm essentials. We were able to give our chosen girl a small frig, microwave, bicycle, backpack, items for her dorm room, and assorted school supplies. This year AAUW TCB will also award a $1000 scholarship to two worthy college bound women. Join us again in 2023 for this event.
