The W M Dulaney Branch of ASALH promotes the study of African American history locally primarily through two major efforts:

(1).   The Heritage Bowl  - An annual challenging competition on African American history for middle school and high school student teams in the DFW area.

(2).  The Freedom School – A comprehensive instructor led course in African American history.  Covering the history of African civilizations, the trans-Atlantic forced migration, slavery, the road to emancipation, battles against segregation, the civil rights movement, and other topics of interest.  Open to all members of the local Dallas Forth Worth communities regardless of background.

Both of these events are held in partnership with Dallas’ world renown African American Museum in the Fair Park.

Mission

The mission of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®) is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community. This mission is accomplished via local branches located across the United States. The organization was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, “The Father of Black History” in 1915.

Needs

We are aiming to raise $15,000 to award the winners and a chaperon of the 2026 Heritage Bowl with an unforgettable all-expense-paid trip.

Equity Statement

ASALH's vision is to be the premier Black Heritage and learned society with a diverse and inclusive membership, aiming to promote greater knowledge of African American history through a program of education, research, and publishing. This implicitly promotes equity by challenging historical omissions and advocating for a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the past, which is crucial for achieving an equitable future.

Our annual Heritage Bowl provides students of all diversity to participate in learning, understanding and competing in Black history.
