A Dallas-based nonprofit with a statewide reach, Texans Can has been in the business of recovering dropouts since 1985. Since 2007, when Richard Marquez, former special advisor on dropout prevention to the U.S. Secretary of Education, assumed the role of CEO and President, Texans Can has placed special emphasis on reading and thinking. Informed by the work of the internationally recognized Feuerstein Institute, Texans Can focuses on cognitive development through reading, giving students confidence and lifting them to graduation status.
Building on this foundation, Texans Can now emphasizes caring for the Whole Student by providing basic needs, psychosocial support through community-linked partnerships, and expanding college- and career-readiness programs with growing opportunities for mentors and volunteers to join in the effort to ensure more of Texans Can's economically disadvantaged students achieve success they never thought possible.
As new students enroll, a variety of basic survival needs arise.
We need your help to continue serving the underserved population of North Texas, by providing students with a high quality education, access to resources, and the skills they need, they can achieve their own economic independence through a pathway of success.
Our Needs
Texans Can turns dropout stories into graduation successes, working in an all-out approach to preventing and recovering dropouts and breaking generational cycles of poverty. At Texans Can, young people who thought they had left an education behind find a welcoming staff, a flexible schedule, and opportunities for mentorship. They boost reading levels and academic confidence, and they learn that school really is for them-they just needed a little help to see that.
Texas Can's economically disadvantaged students need the resources you can provide to encourage them to stay in school and invest in their future. With your help, Texans Can will bring attendance incentives, hygiene products, school uniforms, food, and hotspot connectivity. Without this vital support, students may decide education is a luxury they cannot afford. Please make their futures possible today.
"I didn't think something like this was possible for me … learning to be an electrician is more than what I came to this high school for. It's life-changing." - Jeremiah H. 19, Texans Can student and TRIO Electric pre-apprentice
