Serving Our Seniors (SOS) is a community-based nonprofit committed to preserving the independence and well-being of older adults living in Northeast Tarrant County. Through a powerful volunteer-driven model, we deliver critical services to seniors—at no cost—ensuring they can age safely, and with dignity, while staying connected to the community they call home.

Our mission is to provide help, hope, and healing through three core programs:

TransportationHelp in MotionOur transportation program eliminates one of the greatest barriers to independence by offering rides to routine medical appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, and other essential errands. Volunteers provide not just transportation, but peace of mind and consistent support.

Helping HandsHope at HomeBy offering lawn care, home repairs, annual safety checks, and the construction or installation of wheelchair ramps and safety grab bars, we help seniors maintain their homes—and their independence. These services reduce fall risks, extend safe aging in place, and relieve the burden of home maintenance for older adults living on fixed incomes.

Social OutreachHealing Through ConnectionLoneliness and isolation pose serious threats to senior health. Our Social Outreach program provides monthly social events, friendly phone calls or visits from volunteers, and Holiday Outreach baskets filled with food and thoughtful gifts. Each touchpoint is a reminder that our seniors are seen, valued, and not alone.

SOS currently serves 11 cities in Northeast Tarrant County: Bedford, Colleyville, Euless, Grapevine, Haltom City, Hurst, Keller, North Richland Hills, Richland Hills, Southlake, and Watauga.

Every service we provide is offered with care, compassion, and zero cost to our clients. We are able to do this because of generous community support, grant funding, and the dedication of our volunteers. Your gift ensures that aging does not mean being forgotten.

Mission

Serving Our Seniors (SOS) is a volunteer organization with a mission to preserve the independence and well-being of our senior neighbors in Northeast Tarrant County.

Needs

Our Needs – How You Can Help

Serving Our Seniors (SOS) relies on the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donors to deliver help, hope, and healing to seniors across Northeast Tarrant County. As the cost of food, utilities, and housing continues to rise, older adults living on fixed incomes are being stretched to the breaking point. Waitlists for affordable assisted living options grow longer, and the health effects of loneliness and isolation are becoming increasingly urgent. More than ever, SOS needs compassionate people and community support to meet the growing demand for our services.

All of our volunteer opportunities are fully flexible. You choose when, where, and how often you volunteer. Whether you're available once a week, once a month, or once a season—your time makes a meaningful difference in a senior’s life.

We currently seek volunteers and funding support across all three of our core programs:

Transportation – Freedom Through Flexibility

More than 20 million older adults in the U.S. no longer drive, and those without transportation options often skip medical appointments, go without groceries, or become completely homebound.

Our Transportation program fights this trend by offering safe, reliable rides to essential appointments and errands—grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, and clinics. Volunteers choose the dates, times, and areas that work best for them. Each ride helps preserve a senior's independence, health, and confidence.

Helping Hands – Safety and Stability at Home

As assisted living costs continue to rise—averaging more than $4,800 per month nationwide—nearly 90% of seniors say they want to age in place. But aging at home safely requires maintenance, adaptations, and support that many can no longer afford or perform on their own.

Our Helping Hands program meets that need with free home repairs, safety improvements, and seasonal yard care. We’re seeking experienced handymen, retired tradespeople, and local businesses to help with tasks like grab bar installation, minor repairs, and wheelchair ramp construction. We also welcome Adopt-a-Lawn volunteers to mow and maintain yards during the growing season. Equipment is provided and available for pickup at designated locations.

These services protect our clients from falls, injury, code violations, and potential displacement—ensuring they can remain safely in their homes for as long as possible.

Social Outreach – Combatting Isolation With Connection

Loneliness isn't just a feeling—it’s a public health threat. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, more than one in three adults aged 45+ is lonely, and social isolation increases the risk of heart disease, dementia, stroke, and premature death.

Our Social Outreach program actively addresses this crisis by facilitating meaningful human connection. We invite church groups, service organizations, and scouting troops to help support seasonal outreach, participate in our visiting and phone friend programs, or assist with monthly social events held at community partner venues.

Every conversation, visit, and gathering helps reduce isolation and restore purpose and belonging to seniors who might otherwise be forgotten.

No Time to Volunteer? Your Support Still Matters.

If volunteering isn’t possible right now, your financial support is still deeply needed. Every dollar ensures that transportation, home safety, and social connection remain accessible to the seniors we serve—at no cost to them.

Together, we can rewrite the story of aging for our community: from isolation to inclusion, from vulnerability to vitality.

Equity Statement

At Serving Our Seniors, we believe that every older adult—regardless of race, income level, physical ability, language, religion, gender identity, or background—deserves the opportunity to age with dignity, connection, and independence.

We recognize that systemic inequities have created barriers for many seniors in our community, particularly those who are underserved, isolated, or living on limited means. Our work is rooted in the belief that equitable access to transportation, safe housing, and social connection is not a privilege—it is a right.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment for all clients, volunteers, and community partners. This commitment guides how we design programs, recruit and support volunteers, and make decisions as an organization.

As we serve 11 diverse communities across Northeast Tarrant County, we continually strive to listen, learn, and evolve—ensuring that our services meet the unique needs of every senior, and that no one is left behind due to circumstance or identity.

Equity is not just a value—it’s a responsibility. We carry it forward with humility, transparency, and compassion.
