Second Leash Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working on both ends of the shelter crisis. We step in when families hit hard times — so no dog ever has to lose its home.

North Texas shelters are at 142% capacity. Over 28,000 animals were processed last year. Surrenders are up 40%+ annually. When families run out of options, Second Leash Foundation is there.

We operate five programs and nine initiatives serving all 50 states: Emergency Pet Food Support™, Urgent Veterinary Assistance™ (paid directly to veterinarians, never owners), the Crisis Boarding Program™, Second Chance Seniors™, and the Shelter to Home Initiative™. Every barrier between a dog and a home — we remove it.

Mission

Keeping dogs in a home, even when life falls apart.

Because a job loss, a medical bill, or a housing crisis shouldn't cost a family their dog. And a dog in a shelter shouldn't wait there because a family couldn't afford the adoption fee.

We work on both ends of the shelter crisis, keeping dogs out of shelters through emergency food, urgent vet care, and crisis boarding, and helping dogs already in shelters find their way home through adoption assistance and our Senior Guardian Program™. Five programs. Nine initiatives. Every barrier between a dog and a home — removed.

Needs

Your donation directly funds the programs standing between a dog and a shelter. $35 covers one night of crisis boarding. $75 covers an emergency vet visit. $150 keeps a dog fed for three months. When a family hits rock bottom, we make sure their dog doesn't pay the price.

Equity Statement

Second Leash Foundation serves every family — regardless of income, zip code, background, or circumstance. Financial hardship is not a character flaw, and no dog should lose its home because life fell apart. We don't ask how you got here. We just show up for your dog.
