Salute the Kids, based in Rockwall, Texas, provides weekend family camp retreats that bring healing, resilience, and belonging to military-connected children and their families in North Texas and across the country. These therapeutic camp experiences go far beyond fun — they create safe spaces where kids and parents can reconnect, practice healthy coping skills, and find community with others who truly understand military life.
Behind every uniform is a family serving too. For military kids, growing up means facing challenges most of us will never experience — saying goodbye to a parent for long deployments, moving six to nine times before high school graduation, or silently carrying the worry of what service might cost their loved one. These invisible sacrifices often leave children feeling isolated, anxious, or unsure where they belong. Nearly 40% of military kids report symptoms of anxiety, and parents frequently share that their biggest concern is their children’s emotional well-being.
At Family Camp, children engage in guided activities, campfires, creative expression, and outdoor adventures that help them process emotions, strengthen resilience, and build friendships that last beyond the weekend. Parents tell us again and again that camp is the one place their children can truly be themselves — supported by peers who understand military life and encouraged by mentors and volunteers who value their journey. For service members, knowing their children are cared for in this way provides peace of mind and strength for their own service.
Every retreat is more than an adventure. It is a lifeline — a safe, welcoming space where military children and families can breathe, heal, and find joy together.
Salute the Kids strengthens military-connected children and families through camping adventures that foster healing, resilience, and belonging.
Military families sacrifice so much for our country — and their children serve in their own way. Here in North Texas, the need is tremendous: more than 41,000 military-connected kids attend schools in Dallas/Ft. Worth and surrounding cities. Each one is navigating the invisible sacrifices of military life — long deployments, constant moves, and the stress of uncertainty.
Many of the families we serve in North Texas are part of the National Guard and Reserve, while others are active-duty families. Their challenges may look different, but the impact is just as heavy. Guard and Reserve children often grow up in civilian communities where few peers understand what it means to have a parent serving in the military. They face long separations without the daily support of a military base, leaving them isolated or “different” at school. Active-duty children may face frequent relocations — moving six to nine times before high school graduation — forcing them to rebuild friendships and support systems again and again. Both groups often carry extra responsibilities at home, anxiety during deployments, and the stress of adjusting when a parent returns.
That’s where Salute the Kids comes in. Our weekend family camp retreats, held in North Texas and states across the country, provide safe, therapeutic spaces where kids and parents can heal, belong, and grow stronger together. Guided activities, campfires, creative expression, and outdoor adventures help children learn healthy coping skills, practice emotional regulation, and discover the power of community with others who understand their journey. For parents, it’s peace of mind knowing their children are supported and seen.
