One Hope Village

One Hope Village (OHV) began as a quiet idea and grew into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with one mission: stand beside parents through the hardest chapter of their lives.

Our founder spent years inside the child welfare system, working as a public-school teacher, a CASA Supervisor, and a parent engagement liaison in the Trauma Informed Court of Region 8 North, and kept seeing the same gap: children in the foster care system had support, but their parents had almost none. OHV was born to close that gap.

Through our Parent Mentor Program, launched in October 2023, parents referred by their attorney or caseworker are paired with a Mentor, someone who has walked the same road and successfully reunified with their own children. Mentors meet regularly with their parent, working through a personalized plan built on trust, accountability, and hope that only lived experience can offer. When a parent's case closes, they're invited to return as a Mentor themselves, turning survival into a cycle of restoration.

What sets a Mentor apart is not a certification, it's lived experience. A Mentor is not a caseworker or an attorney and does not give legal advice. Instead, they are someone who has personally sat in the same courtroom, completed the same service plan requirements, and successfully reunified with their own children, so they know the process from the inside out. That firsthand knowledge lets them translate expectation into action: not just telling a parent to "complete counseling," but helping them schedule it, attend consistently, and reflect on what they're learning. It also builds trust fast. Many parents enter the system guarded and mistrustful of professionals, but a Mentor is often the first person they truly listen to, because there is credibility in having lived it. That trust becomes the bridge between what the court is asking and what the parent actually understands, reducing confusion, increasing engagement, and helping families move toward reunification sooner.

The need is urgent: 83% of the parents in our program were themselves involved in the child protection system as children. They aren't just fighting today's challenges; they're fighting a legacy. The system they grew up in is the only one they know, and without intervention, it repeats. Our Mentors don't just support parents through a case; they help redirect a generational trajectory before it passes to the next child.

Each month, our Family Dinner brings mentors, parents, and volunteers together around one table, paired with expert-led workshops on budgeting, healthy relationships, and trauma healing, while our childcare team gives the children in our program their own trauma-informed lessons on relationship building, identity building, and social skills.

The result isn't just compliance with a court order. It's transformation: families healed, trust rebuilt, and generational cycles disrupted for good.
