Rescuing cats from local animal shelters, spaying and neutering each before they are adopted, reduces the number of homeless cats in our community. The result is there are less sick, injured and abused cats which is our ultimate goal.
About Us
New Beginnings Cat Rescue (NBCR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit group. Founded in 2005, NBCR is an all volunteer, no-kill cat rescue dedicated to rescuing cats from euthanasia at Garland Animal Control. We are foster based and are in-store cat rescue for PetSmart, located at George Bush Freeway and North Garland Avenue in Garland, Texas.
NBCR is dedicated to alleviating the crisis and tragedy of unwanted and abandoned cats, with an emphasis on addressing cat overpopulation issues and educating the public about the importance of spaying and neutering.
Our Needs
NBCR relies heavily on monetary donations from the general public and charitable giving organizations in order to carry out our mission to help find homes and provide medical care and sterilization for animals in need. Although adoption fees help offset the cost of our expenses, we rarely break even when an animal is adopted. NBCR is a non-profit, 100% volunteer-run organization. We are fortunate enough to have an adoption venue to house a few animals (maintained solely by our volunteers) we do not have a physical shelter to house our animals and we rely on our volunteers to foster the animals in our care at their homes.
We provide age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, flea and deworming medication, antibiotics and any additional medical care including boarding (if necessary) to the animals in our care. We also provide supplies like food and litter to our volunteer foster homes. We help with local Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) efforts to help offset the pet-overpopulation epidemic and assist low-income families with low-cost medical care for their pets, including sterilization efforts.
Most of the medical care our animals receive is through partnerships with local area veterinary clinics who offer rescue discounts to our organization. Throughout the past 20 years we have been working with local animal shelters helping to reduce euthanasia rates, these veterinary clinics go above and beyond to assist our animals by not only providing low cost pricing but will also see our animals in emergency situations when available on weekends, after hours, and on holidays. Partnering with these veterinary clinics allows us to stretch our dollars further in situations which might normally be considered unaffordable.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers make NBCR what it is. Our volunteers are a wonderful group of caring, compassionate, professional women and men. Everyone is very appreciative of one another and just wants what is best for our kitties. Our volunteer opportunities are listed below:
Cage cleaners play a vital role in keeping our adoption center clean, safe, and welcoming. We have cleaning shifts twice daily—most morning cleaners arrive before 11 a.m., and evening cleaners come in after 5 p.m. As each cage is cleaned, the cat gets to come out, stretch, explore, play with toys, and use scratching posts. Cleaners sanitize the cage, shake out and refresh bedding as needed, scoop the litter box, and provide fresh food and water. While it can be a bit demanding, it’s incredibly rewarding—there’s nothing like one-on-one time with a grateful kitty in a clean space!
Foster Parents are responsible for providing a safe, clean, indoor environment that is properly air-conditioned or heated. They must feed high-quality, age-appropriate food and ensure fresh water is available daily. Regular nail trimming and training cats to use scratching posts are essential. Foster families should transport cats to and from the adoption center on Saturdays and Sundays when scheduled, as well as to the veterinarian when necessary. All foster cats and kittens must be kept indoors at all times, and families should foster for only one rescue group at a time. Communication with NBCR via email is required regarding the care or health condition of cats in foster care. Most importantly, foster families must provide love, attention, and interaction to help prepare the animals for successful adoption.
Adoption Counselors help match cats with their forever families. They assist potential adopters during our adoption hours—Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—by introducing them to cats, answering questions, and ensuring the right fit for both the cat and the adopter. Once a match is made, counselors help guide the adopter through the application process, adoption fee payment, and pick-up arrangements. They also help keep the cages tidy, play with the cats, and educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering.
Laundry Helpers help by picking up, laundering, and returning cat bedding. It’s a behind-the-scenes task that makes a big difference in the comfort and cleanliness of our adoption center.
