$40,000 Goal

Supporting independence for the elderly is at the heart of Metroport Meals On Wheels’ mission.  For 44 years, MMOW has relieved isolation, supported independence, provided nutrition, enhanced personal safety, and provided over 2.25 million meals to seniors.   MMOW is a community-based organization born of neighbors taking care of neighbors in rural communities where no other services were available that has grown into a strong organization which provided 179,153 meals to 1,200+ participants in 25 communities in 3 counties in 2023.

A frail senior, alone and hungry, paints a dismal picture.   A volunteer bringing a hot meal, lively conversation, and smiles dramatically changes the picture.  We have been relieving seniors of their greatest fears–loss of independence and life in a nursing home–by providing support enabling them to age with dignity and live independently in their homes.  MMOW provides assurances for the seniors--freedom from worry about food and confidence that there will be a personal visit, and for their families, assurance that a caring volunteer will look in on their loved one daily.

MMOW receives NO federal or state funding.  Community support enables MMOW to cover the gap between the average participant payment of $1.14 cents and the average FOOD cost of $6.57 for each home delivered meal.

Giving Activity

Mission

Metroport Meals On Wheels, Inc. is a nonprofit, grassroots volunteer advocate for the elderly and those in need through home-delivered meals, senior center lunch programs and other support services. MMOW is "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" to alleviate hunger, isolation, and loneliness in our communities, and to foster the independence, worth, and dignity of each individual we serve.

Needs

We are in urgent need of food donations to our pantry for our "Staples for Seniors" program.

Our "Staples for Seniors" program delivers special bags of food to seniors’ doors every month. These shelf-stable breakfast and dinner meals supplement the hot, home-delivered meals and ensure that something good to eat is always readily available. This program gives a major boost to seniors’ budgets, freeing up money that would normally be spent on groceries to provide for medication, transportation, utilities, and other essentials.
